Just had a call from the wife saying that the windscreen in the 6er has cracked. There is no damage to the outside of the car or screen at all. I washed it recently so know there were no chips either.
She is telling me that when she parked it up this morning at home on flat, level ground, that was no crack. She has then got back into it just now and there is a 6" crack from the bottom right corner... WTF?

How can a screen crack whilst a car is stationary!?

I've known windscreens to crack if there's rust around the screen but I doubt you'd have rust on your 6er.

If it had a chip and we'd had a frost I could understand it too. But a stationary car, with no pre-existing damage, in stable temperatures?! I've got her to check the a pillar & bonnet to see if something has hit the car while it was on the drive. No damage there either.

I know she is telling the truth as we've had a bit of an argument over it! I just can't figure it out.

could there have been a small crack which then 'popped' from the slightest little thing?

I thought stationary meant someone is in the car?

I've had similar, it's often a small, almost invisible chip, more like a tiny dot of frosting that starts it off.

Really? When there is no load exerted on the car at all?

Yes, had it in my Civic.

Heard a 'bang' and thought the stone hit the A-pillar. Few hours later after being in the office, came out and a crack was extending from the edge of the screen. On closer inspection there was a tiny chip right on the edge of the screen. Few millimetres over and it would have hit the A-pillar. As it was, new windscreen needed. frown

We had similar with a Mini. No apparent low temperatures, no stone chips, no previous cracks, and yet one morning the screen had a six inch crack.

Upon researching it was a common fault with the early Minis due to the curvature of the screen and the glass not strong enough. Are there other reported incidents with the 6er (What is a 6er?)?

Best of luck

Mike

I know of someone who had this on a brand new range rover sport as they put the heaters on.

Sometimes happens with temperature changes, possible the sun was shining on one bit and the rest was in shade...

That's occupied.

Stationary means "not moving". Or pens and paper, but I don't think that applies in this thread.

This happened to my wife's Touran. I was driving it on the motorway and remember hearing a loud noise as a stone hit the windscreen. Checked it out later, and there was no visible problem.

However, the next morning there was an 8" crack running from the corner of the windscreen where the stone had hit.

You had a bang though. From what I'm being told, there was nothing at all. Literally, get out of car with no damage. Get back into car with crack showing. We live in the middle of nowhere, off the road so it wasn't passing traffic etc.

I've spoken to BMW to see if there was any known issues with the car, they say no. (Sorry btw, 6er = BMW 6 series) I can't find any other stories of the same problem either.

That would make sense too, but overcast and grey all day!

It's not the end of the world but I could just do without the hassle of dealing with the fktards at Autoglass.

Yeah, had it happen on my golf. Normally then wait until the MOT is due before changing it.

Yep, i had a crack just appear without any clues, it was only when the glass guy came up, he looked along the line of the crack, and there was a tiny pin prick of a dot, right up close on the edge.

I had it with the Vectra. Stopped at a service station. Went in, had a pee, came out, and there was a great big crack right up in front of the driver. I don't remember anything hitting the screen and could see no damage, just a crack.

I guess sometimes they are just under a bit of stress...and eventually it's all too much and as it cools/warms it cracks.
