Usually, once a month, I stroll into my local newsagents and get the latest copy of Evo. I might browse the other mags, and have occasionally brought various others, including Classic and Sportscar, Car and Octane. But always Evo, or similar first, and this has been a pattern for the past 25 or so years, since I was in my early teens.

Last weekend, I siddled up to the latest Evo, checked I had the money, and then reached out and picked up Octane from last month - the one with the green 1973 911 2.4S on the cover. I still haven't bought any reading material featuring the latest stuff, and don't seem to want to either.

So, what's happened to me? Have I gotten old, more mature, or just grown up - I'm still a couple of years shy of 40? I've always, by which I mean from the age of about 7, wanted a Lotus Elan Sprint, but now I find the only cars drawing me in are those from at least 20 years ago - I'd love a mid-80s 911 Carrera, or Sierra Cosworth, or Lotus Cortina, to go with that Elan.

Anyone else gone through this - is this the male version of The Change???

I, also in my late thirties, have found that as you get to this age your tastes mature. It's no longer about going fastest any more. It becomes more about the drive/experience/character of a car. I find myself enjoying driving some very diverse things these days. For example, I love to drive my 190E which could in no way be called quick, sporting or even particularly luxurious. But it ooozes character. I was at a Pistonheads run that was wall-to-wall exotica and the car I wanted to take home, desperately, was a '72 911T. I think we're just realising that modern cars have a certain mystery element missing that can only be found in older cars. Maybe it's because that's when cars were made without marketing or accounting involvement. Or if it was, it was low down on the priority list. I don't know, but some of these old cars just have a soul that modern cars do not.

I have found myself doing this more recently too. For years I have avidly consumed CAR, & topgear, before that performance Car and Fast Lane, occasionally I have slummed it with autocar and even WhatCar. But I havent bought any modern car mags for at least a year I think the last one was so that I had something to read on a flight, and that was because the store didnt have a classic mag. Recently I have been found with Volksworld, and even Classic Ford, despite nver having owned (or seriously desired) a ford!

I have put this down to modern cars being essentially dull and samey , whilst there is a lot of internet resource on the subject if the need arises. Classic car mags often deal with interesting issues, renovations and feature cars I admired as a kid (when they were newer) which have "character" (read are technically rubbish!).

Perfectly normal that, i just bought that magazine as a back copy from Ebay as i couldnt find it anywhere in the shops!
Purely for the TVR bit for me. I find i buy magazines to go with whatever is taking my imagination at the time, sometimes TopGear if im in cuckoo land, sometimes PerformanceVW, sometimes a classic car mag, always different never bored.
Certainly not old wink

And that 911 2.4S in Octane is on my Most Wanted List - in that colour!

It might well be the hankering for variety. This very afternoon, as me and Mrs PB were walking through a car park, we went past an E28 535i and an E92 335i convertible. The missus turned to me, and fair enough I was oggling the cars, but it was the 5-series that not only got my attention, but started me thinking about buying one as a run around...

I'm 27 and if I ever replace the 355, it will have to be with something older!

Classic cars have so much more character, style and are way more fun to drive!

You just have taste my friend!
