Radio Code reset help!

Guys - wondering if anyone can help here - been trying for ages and the internets seems of little help on this...
Got a '00 year Jeep Cherokee with a factory fit stereo -
after changing the battery - the code was entered wrong three times and thus now brings up a 'wait 2hr' message when the radio is turned on.
I've driven it numerous times in excess of two hours but it doesn't seem to want to allow another code to be entered.
Various site has inferred that if the ignition is left on for two hours then it'll allow the code to be entered again - but its a turbo diesel and the ignition coil being left on for two hours surely can't be a good idea?

I've got the correct code in the service history, just cant get the stereo to the point where i can input it. model is "mopar 82202700"
any help most gratefully recieved, as musicless driving is starting to get me down!
