I know i know another one of these threads

Basically i am a self employed sales rep, with a large portfolio of clients

I need a suitable car for motorway hacking

I do around 900 a week, requirements are

Not Base spec, ie LX or higher needed

Good economy 55 mpg+

Large boot ( golf clubs, product samples, etc)

Climate control

And most importantly (as with any car nut) it needs to have impressive poke (ie 120 BreakHP +)

I have a budget of around 4k and it needs to be reliable, time is money etc

My previous car was a Hyundai Coupe 1.6 SE, but this had a nasty ending, perfect car in every respect apart from the MPGs

120hp is impressive poke?

55mpg from a car that is new enough to be reliable for 900 miles a week yet old enough to only cost £4k and be big enough to carry golf clubs and the like might be a tall order.

How about something like an early Jaguar X-Type 2.0d, I think they are just in budget and being diesel should do 45mpg. They have a large boot, are comfy, a good steer and go ok. Also a £300-400 remap will really wake them up.

Not sure what else is going to offer 55mpg ability, Skoda Fabia diesel maybe or something else small with a diesel engine in.

Can't believe your Hyundia did 55mpg.

Isn't this the question that the Mondeo and Vectra were designed to answer?

I presume the 2.7 diesel S-Type has yet to get down to those sorts of levels? I was always impressed by the class and refinement of them. Will make a great bargain barge some time.

On a related note - what about a Mondeo? You won't get a new shape one for that, but the square shape 'Puma' diesel is a fine engine, they're comfortable, well screwed together and surprisingly engaging to drive.

Indeed.

Mundane-o is the best answer i can think of.

Or potentially an Accord 2.2 diesel.
Will they really do 55mpg?

At a constant 70mph, a modernish diesel one ought to. Something like this:

The official combined figure is 47mpg, but it should be able to considerably better that on the motorway, since that's the entire reason for the existence of the car.

Hmm, so what is your criteria for the badge? Is Skoda acceptable, for example (I'd put them on a par with VW/Volvo/etc these days)?

Having said that, I'd probably put Ford on a par with VW these days...

A Sensible Suggestion.

It even has the 120hp of which you dream thereof.

Or alone the same lines, MG ZT / Rover 75 diesel. ~50 MPG on a motorway, and ~160 HP with a few mods.

Best feature is the badge... everyone thinks their rubbish you will get something younger, with more toys and lower mileage than a Mundeo or Vectra...

That looks remarkable value actually, even if it is a Vectra in a frock. smile

if you don't want a ford or vx then i reckon you need to spend more money !!

why do you need impressive poke for sitting on the motorway all day.. its hardly going to be used to track work or hooning is it..
