Scenario 1 - So, I'm confused beyond words. I have a number plate on retention and want to best describe it on Ebay when I sell it. I have the V778 doc which names me as the grantee. Can I sell the plate and make the purchaser the new owner outright?

When I come to sell the V778 retention doc, do I fill in the Nominee details with the purchasers details and then they own the plate, or do I still own the plate?

I want to sell the plate and make the purchaser the Grantee so that should they wish to swap the plate over in the future, they don't have to go via me with regard to signing forms and posting to my address etc.

And if that wasn't confusing enough....

Scenario 2 - To add a twist, I have a second plate in sequential order to the one described above. Now this is on a car I'm selling and I've downloaded the V317 from the DVLA website. This form allows me to retain the plate OR assign a new grantee...

So, if the nominee of my retained plate (as described in scenario 1) later down the line, fills in the V317, can they upgrade their nominee status to Grantee? So in simple terms, can a nominee put a plate on retention and in doing so become the new Grantee, and as such, become the new owner outright?

Phew?! Get any of that?

Nope - you can't change the grantee. Even when they have their name as the nominee you will still retain the right to that plate. Therefore, it is in their best interests to put it onto a vehicle of their name.

Perfect. I'll make sure I state that when selling the plate. Thanks for your reply!
