Racing Revolutions: Goodwood Reveals '11 FoS Theme

Next year's FoS will hail the game-changing moments in motorsport

The theme for the 2011 Festival of Speed will be 'Racing Revolutions - Quantum leaps that shaped motor sport', Good wood has revealed.

There are plenty of anniversaries to celebrate what Goodwood calls the 'ceaseless quest for increased power; greater efficiency; more speed.'

In 2011 it will be 75 Years since Auto Union won the European Championship with a mid-engined car; 60 years since increased economy helped the normally-aspirated Ferraris beat supercharged Alfa Romeos; 30 years since the dawn of rallying's four-wheel-drive age with the Audi Quattro; 25 years since turbocharged engines ruled the roost in F1; and 20 years since a rotary-engined Mazda took the chequered flag (first, that is) at Le Mans.

"It is therefore especially fitting," says Goodwood's press release, "to celebrate the innovations - both giant strides and iterative evolutions; masterstrokes and blind alleys - that have seen the racing automobile develop from crude behemoth to space-age projectile." Quite.

Other anniversaries that we can expect to see celebrated in Goodwood's inimitable style include the centenary of the Indianapolis 500, and the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar E-Type.

Goodwood has also set in stone its previously provisional dates for the Moving Motor Show, Festival of Speed and Revival. The FoS will be held on 1-3 July, with the Moving motor Show on 30 June. The Goodwood Revival will run from 16-18 September.

Missed this year for the first time as it was around the due date of our first baby.

He will be one this time around, do you think it will be a bit of struggle with a one year old all day? should I book a hotel and do two shorter days?

What have other PH parents done with young children?

Cant leave him with Grandparents, because they always come with us!

Took my daughter to her first FoS this year (she was 16 months at the time) Think she had a nice day out. One thing I would say is to buy child ear protectors before you go as they were quite expensive to buy on the day, mind you, they can be used time and time again after wink

Tempted to take our little one to the revival next year. We've been meaning to go ourselves for years (done the festival several times) and this would be a few days before his 3rd birthday. He loves cars already, so this would just reaffirm his interest. smile

The 787B has been to Goodwood at least once before. There is a 757 which has been active in the Group C/GTP series in recent years. Awesome to hearing it yowling down the Hangar Straight...

Another year and another pair of awesome Goodwood events to look forward to. Hopefully a good haul of Group 7 machinery - the Bryant Ti22 might make a nice addition in terms of innovation...

yes

I have vivid (and slightly painful) memories of being on the Donny Park pitlane 2 years ago when it shot past at full chat!

Yes - completely insane noise! Was that the race where Andy Purdie just walked the field in the R90CK?

I was at Donnington for that race and it was freezing!

I have to say noise of the day for me was the Sauber C9 once they got it running right, took me back a few years!

Yes, the epic V8 thunder - I think that was the C9's first race back after its Silverstone Classic shunt. Did Sauber not win the 1989 Group C race at Donington, or am I dreaming?

Was that the yellow Nissan?

Got a few photos at home of the driver accepting the trophy and of the car in the pits - thought I'd hosted them online but unfortunately not. That Sauber looked rather tasty too.

Was 1989 when it raced in the black AEG livery or was that 1988? I remember seeing them at Silverstone in both guises following the Kouros C8, I'm not sure if my Dad ever took me to Donnington for Group C which it strange considering its the closest they ever came to the North East and we went all over during those years, Brands, Silverstone, Nurburging, Spa. Come to think of it they raced in the black livery at Brands which was 1988 so presumably Donnington was the year after?

One lasting memory from those years was remember thinking John Winter was going to flatten me when he hit a tyre wall head on directly in front of me in a Joest 962 at Brands, must have been 1988, he just got out of the car and gave me a knowing smile, i think my dad thought it was quite funny that i had tried to jump backwards out of the way.

Fond memories!
