Talk to me about tow balls

Right, I am in need of a tow bar for my Saab 9000. Have seen one on ebay here

but it is lacking the tow ball. Forgive the rather noddy question, but can I just buy this and fit it? I presume that tow balls and the electrics are standardised?

What are you pulling?

That standard towball and electrics are fine....but if you're planning on pulling a caravan with an AL-KO stabiliser you'll need an extended neck towball.

Just for light duties. My dinghies are light and it's just to get them a few miles from beach to home.
