Mercedes-Benz CLK 320/430 Thoughts/Opinions?

Hi all
I'm looking to have my first proper spend just for me next year when I get rid of my Focus. Budget is going to be somewhere between £5000-£7000 possibly pushing upwards if something really special appears.
My first problem is being a bit spoiled for choice, but I seem to keep coming back to the BMW 330ci as it ticks the boxes of good looking, moderately powerful and somewhat practical.
As I was browsing around today I thought I'd check out CLKs as they hadn't come to mind before; this is when I came accross the 430. They seem to hover around the same price as the leggier 330s yet posses way more power and a few more toys.
I'm aware they probably aren't as tight to drive as a 3 series and i'm not too fussed about the auto box as most of my driving is communting and I live close to work, hence fuel consumption isn't an issue either. Noticed the cabrios are within budget too should I feel the need to unleash my hairdresser side.
I've had a brief read up and seem to come across common issues such as generally high maintainance/service costs, rust(!) and the general fact that if something goes wrong it's going to cost; but reading further a lot of this seems to be worst case and could happen to any car.
So, does anyone have any experience with the CLK 320/430 would anyone recommend them? Avoid them like the plague?
Any opinions welcome and also suggestions on anything similliar you'd recommend for the budget that I may have overlooked.
