So anyway, due to 'The Recession' my businesses have taken a battering this year. So with heavy heart, I said goodbye to my beloved 911 last month.

I had a couple of grand left over after the finance was paid off, so I was thinking what could I get now as my daily drive? Needs to be reliable, reasonably quick, not a chav mobile, and practical.

I came up with a Skoda Octavia VRS.

After looking at the few requisite sheds, I've found a nice one today at a stealer. 51 plate in black, 90k, nice condition, nice history, £2500. Pick it up tomorrow.

I've had a look round Briskoda and on here, they seem to be quite good. What do we think of these? Will I like it? Any owners like to share their wisdom and thoughts?

Or have I gone for a complete banana? Only time will tell I guess smile

If your buying a Skoda after a 911, at least go rear engined!

I actually would. If I could afford/find one. I think it'd make an interesting project.

Recently got one to replace my daily - keeping boxster in garage...

It's a cracking car goes well and totally practical - as you say briskoda and related sites seems to have all the info anyone would want...

Fundamentally it's a better and cheaper golf than a golf... remaps well too apparently ;-)

Simes.

Me too, I've been keeping half an eye out for one of these, for a while. Almost non existent in the UK, it would seem. I love old Skodas!

I once had a go in a Skoda 130 Rapid a bit like this:

I wasn't expecting to like it, but to my surprise it was ace!
Funnily enough, I was trying to keep pace with a 911 at the time - it was my boss's car (a motor trader), who had neglected to tell me where we were taking the Skoda. Luckily, he was only cruising along - but I had to drive like I was in the RAC Rally to keep up with him. Great fun!

Ray well done for making the right decision and cutting the expense. Hope the business picks up and you are once again in a position to buy what you really want to drive.

I would have no shame in the VRS whatsoever - they look good and go well by all accounts. My only reservations is that they are in the price range of the dickwads and finding a good one may take some searching.

I've traded up and down over the years and sometimes it actually does you good to get behind the wheel of a cheaper car for a while.I've always found that if I drive an expensive car every day that I become used to it and some of the specialness-the sense of occasion is lost and it just becomes another car.Another good thing is that you won't be worrying about it when it's parked up or left overnight somewhere and also wondering how much the next service bill/insurance renewal/tyres etc are going to cost.

Yes indeedy. Now imagine it hasn't got a roof, just a Tbar. I had one in exactly that shade of, er, orange or Rowan Red IIRC.
I've never had a car which got more attentionsmile

Bias, but I think there great cars. just make sure that you find a good one. Its not too hard to find a looked after unmodded example, keep an eye out on briskoda good examples come for up for sale reasonably regularly.

My brother's got one and is very happy with it. I've driven it too and have to say the handling and brakes are good and reasonably quick. Only thing he has had go wrong so far is both rear wheel bearings needing replacing (65k miles) and the heat shield on the cat rattles.

Briskokda seems a good forum, few things recommended to do to a VRS - replacement breather hoses for one and a rear anti roll bar apparrantly improves turn-in amongst other things.

What colour are you going for?

Don't worry, embrace the opportunity of being let out at junctions.

I've had 2 Mk1 Octavia vRS's and would have another without any hesitation. Standard or modified, they are reliable, cheap to maintain and can be quite frugal. Briskoda is a great resource too!

yes One of the great advantages of the Octavia vRS is that it looks dull enough not to attract any unwanted attention or animosity. A proper 'Q' car...

It's no 911, but it's a sound car with enough performance to do the job, pretty good build quality (interior plastics etc. not quite up to Audi/VW standards, but not far off) and solid reliability.

If you come across a black estate registered YT07 JGY, don't touch it, though - it's been ragged within inches of its life.

How about an RS4?? Even with 19 million miles on the clock. Just watch them as they approach 20 million miles...

The link is that whenever someone suggests buying an Octavia some inbred d1ck says that a much older/leggy and potentially far more expensive to maintain Audi would be a better choice. The B4 variant is usually the preferred recommendation because the twit recommending it thinks that if he shows he knows the precise model name he'll more knowledgable.
