hey, im thinking of changing my car in february as thats when my insurance runs out on my current car, i turn 19 next year and will have my 1 years no claims bonus so was wandering what car would be good for me, i would like something faster than my 1.1 citroen, obviously i cant get anything too fast as the insurance will be too much, as i said above my budget is £5,000.

I'm 19 and hoping to get an MX5 next year. Worth having a look at, you'll get a good one for £5K.

Does the 5k budget include insurance? If you're looking for something quicker I would budget at least half that for insurance...

Just as an example for you James, I looked into buying a P-reg mk1 MX-5 1.8iS at the end of the summer, I'm 19 and have had my license for 2yrs (no ncb as I started of sharing with my Mum etc) and my cheapest quote was just under £1300 fully comp with a £1600 car, 5,000mi £700 excess (I think)

A £4k Octavia vRS 1.8T came in at £1800
£4k Focus ST170 was similar to the Skoda

ETA: I decided to stick with mine and wait until after Uni, when I'm in a job and have the means of splashing a bit more cash

It's sometimes cheaper to put one of your parents on as a named driver. Remember to try with and without. Also try going for some more unusual cars. Focus' are pretty typical young drivers cars and as such have a high risk profile. My 328 cost me 1600 a year at 20 with 2 years driving and no no claims. Admiral wanted double that to insure me on an ST170 which is much slower.

Don't know until you shop around...
If you can avoid it, on any car try to avoid the luxury and sport trim levels because that can put the insurance up by a fair bit. You can always just buy the parts that are different and fit them.

19 years old? On a BMW? If you do find someone that will insure you then expect to be bent over for the priveledge.

Oh yeah I know that, I'm just trying to look at all different options to see what I can and can't get.

I'd love an old car but my mum wants me to have something that's reliable and safe, which is a bit annoying, and seeing as she is helping me with the insurance she gets a say in what I buy.

In the same boat James, that's why I didn't get the MX-5, my Dad covers the servicing etc and wants me to have a newish car, so if I were to change from my December 02 car that I've had for 18months, I'd need a car 18months newer than that. It was ironic really as a couple of weeks later my car threw up a £956 bill...

How about a Yaris SR? More of a 'warm' hatch than 'hot' with 138bhp. But has 5 star safety to please the parents and they look quite good IMO.

I had a look at a few of those yaris and they are just slightly out of my price range, an escort mk2 could be quite cool but I'm not sure?
