I'm looking to get a new car in the next couple of weeks, so will need to remove/transfer my personalised plate from my old car.

I know it's meant to take up to 14 days to transfer/put on retention, but does anyone know whether it can be done sooner?

Would it be better for me to put the plate onto retention first, and then transfer it to the new car once I've bought it, or can I just transfer it to the new car when I sell the old one?

I did have a look at the DVLA site, and saw the forms I needed to complete, but thought I'd find out what the best way of doing it is.

Cheers

Put your number plate on rentention now. Once you have purchsed your new car, arrange an insurace covernote showing the new car details along with your private mark. Once you have the covernote, take to your local DVLA office with new cars MOT (if old enough) copy of tax disc and V5, I belive there is one form to complete.

I think this is correct

Yeah that looks like the best option. It says to allow 14 days, but I'm hoping it won't take that long.
I'm going to see the car again tomorrow, so don't want to be waiting on the reg for too long.

Cheers

I recently transferred mine & it took less than a week to come back from Shrewsbury DVLA. Maybe they aren't busy at the moment.

It's not the dealing of the transfer time that you should be concerned about, but the returning of the updated V5c. Allow upto 6wks for this to come through.
The past few that I've done recently have been around the 3-4wk mark.

You should put the plate on retention now. If you sell the car with the plate on it, technically the plate will be transferred to the new owner. You are then relying on their goodwill to remove the plate and transfer it back to you. If they have a change of heart after they have bought the car, you have no recourse to recover it.
