Nissan Reveals Murano CrossCabriolet

Wraps come of soft-top crossover SUV thingy. We ask why...

Crikey
Crikey
Nissan will unveil a convertible version of the Murano SUV at the LA motor show tomorrow (17 November).

It's called the Murano CrossCabriolet and it is, says Nissan, "The world's first all-wheel drive crossover convertible" that "delivers the open-air exhilaration of a convertible while extending the versatility of the Murano in exciting new ways".

We say: it's the answer to a question that nobody has ever asked.

The Murano CrossCabriolet, which - we're assured - represents a "breakthrough in concept and design" (rather than, say, a slow-selling SUV with the roof chopped off to give it a bit of publicity) is set to go on sale in early 2011.

So get down to your local Nissan dealer and pop a deposit down now. Or not...

A crossover too far I'd have thought... though I like the original SUV, I have to say.

One of the worlds most pointless cars just became the ultimate in pointless. Seriously, who's gonna buy this?

Makes about as much sense as a full-size, two-door coupé MPV... hang on, were Nissan and Renault already in bed together when the Avantime was launched?

They must be really struggling to find niches to fill.

Strangely, despite the ridiculous idea, I actually think the picture looks OK. Certainly better than most of the hatchback derived coupe-cabriolets on the market.

I'm predicting that this will sell stonkingly well and create a new niche. After all, the reason most people want an SUV is not for any of its physical capabilities or carrying capacity, but simply because it's high up. Therefore the same thing, with no apparent sacrifices (as the typical buyer doesn't actually care about chassis strength, off-road ability or load space) but with top-down ability - I can see them doing quite well...

I think it'll sell well simply because I find the average human being seems to defy credibility on a near-hourly basis these days.

Bit harsh to call a Land Rover a 'crossover', ain't it? It's a proper 4x4!
