No definitive answers to this on the web that I can see.

Can I mix coolant types up? Ashamed to say that I have neglected this a bit and the coolant light came on, definitely needs topping up a little bit.

Can I just go out and buy a top end coolant even if it's not the same as what was in there before?

I wouldn't mix.

Do you know what is currently in it ? (what car+ engine btw?)

I think that the main different types are always consistent colours, so Red, Blue or Orange. Or drain and flush it and replace the whole lot.

I, erm, don't know what colour it is because I can't see it. It's a Z4 and it's not a clear reservoir, it's black plastic so I can't actually see.

TooLateForAName is pretty much correct & if you can't see what colour it is get yourself something like this, http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/... This can be used to suck some coolant out so you can see the colour & also check that you have the right amount in there .
