£5k Budget.. What car?
Discussion
So I'm 20 years old (21 in Jan) and looking for a new car. Budget is 5k, can stretch to 5.5k. Insurance isn't an issue as I'm on a traders policy on which I can have a personal car, the only issue is fuel costs. I love V8s so if fuel wasn't an issue I would have just bought a C43 AMG.
Now I'm looking for either comfort/luxury or speed. A mix of both will be perfect.
A list of cars I owned before:
2 Nissan Almera GTis
A Saxo VTR
An E36 'vert
An MR2
What would you reccomend?

Audi TT225 & E36 M3 are good suggestions. Like I said, don't want to pay fuel costs on a V8 so kind of out of the question.
Soarer is abit old to be fair, E46 330ci or maybe a 325ci 'vert could be on the list?
Can you get decent S2Ks for this money?
What about something different? Is there something abit more rare for this money?

If insurance isnt an issue then why are you looking at the VTR's? Surely VTS would be much better?
U can pick up a good Impreza Turbo for that price, but dont know if the running costs would suit you.
EK9 Civic Type R?
DC2 Integra Type R?
These should be ok on running costs, fuel wise, if you resists not going into the Vtec all the time you'd be fine.

With your eyes.
Urgh this is cliché-a-licious... but an MX5?
I only say it because they really are cracking good cars and you'd get a very nice one for your budget I expect. My mk1 1.8 manages 30mpg average and 28mpg when I push it a bit.
Really is a great car and you'd be left with a sizeable chunk of cash left depending on whether you go for mk1 or mk2
Edit: Ahh, in hindsight I'm not convinced an mx5 would cover comfort, luxury or outright speed in all honesty - still, if you're in the market for a not very comfortable, not mind-blowingly fast and fairly un-luxurious car you know where to look.

map it, replace the console bushes, get better suspension and laugh at VTEC owners as you average 50mpg while giving it some!

Seriously - unless you do big (18k+ a year) mileages, a diesel really isn't worth considering to a petrolhead - you'll save £500-1,000 on fuel with a diesel, but you've got more things to go wrong (turbos, common rail injection systems, DPFs), all of which cost £1k+ to fix. Plus (with 4-pot diesels - 6-pots are a better proposition) you don't get a nice sound and you typically get a narrower power-band than a performance petrol. As said on p.1 - life's too short.
If your life is driving around all over the place then a diesel makes a real case for itself...so get a bike or an MX-5 for the weekends!
