The PH search function doesn't appear to be working and I've gone back though quite a few pages on here but haven't found anything really conclusive.

I am thinking of treating myself in 12-18 months from now and have eyed up either a 3.6 TDV8 Range Rover Vogue or a Nissan GT-R (completely different I know).

The running costs of the Range Rover don't appear to be that bad, I work in the motor trade and can source consumables etc relatively cheaply myself.

However, as spectacular as the GT-R is, some running costs stories have frightened me; mandatory services every 6 months irrespective of mileage, warranty voided if LC is used (why advertise it in the first place then???), ridiculously expensive brake discs, pads etc.

Are they a money pit? I've been looking on Classified and noticed that many people don't keep them for long; is there a reason behind that? Are the running costs that bad? Or am I being paranoid?

I know there is popular mantra on here "If you have to ask, you can't afford it", that is silly, If I don't know, I'll never know if I can or can't afford to run such a car.

12-18 months! I couldn't possibly plan that far in advance. Think the longest I have ever planned to buy a car was 2 weeks!

I know, I know recession and all that but I have some good solid investments at the moment and hopefully I'll be in a stage to legitimately afford a GT-R outright by then.

Holy moly, I think about 2-3 months ahead on cars and I thought I was keen!

P.S. I massively agree with you on the "if you don't know, you can't afford it" rubbish, it's just plain stupid.

Just don't have any little bumps...

(I concede that it could be eye-wateringly expensive even without crashing into things!)

I know you noted that the two cars are completely different, but I couldn't help but be amused that you're considering one of the worst handling, heaviest, slowest, ugliest, dullest and lethargic cars on sale but also one of the fastest, best handling, dramatic and most exciting biggrin Regarding the GTR, the only stories I've heard are expensive crash repairs (search for the thread on the GTR that had a slight bump which activated the pedestrian impact bonnet raising mechanism...).

Blimey, from teacher to Ebay seller in a year and you're already buying a 50k+ car!

I'm in the wrong job. yes

Teaching did not work out for me, it was one of those 'recession proof' ideas I had been arm twisted into doing.

I'd already had lots of motor factors experience and I went on my own with the Ebay thing. In March these was a blip but it has since picked up massively. There are other avenues I have invested in also and they are also bearing fruits now too.

I always try not to get sucked into one thing, it's always good to have your eyes open and explore options.

I won't be a millionaire doing this stuff, but it's nice to have a comfortable life.

PS: Hopefully it won't be £50k and it'll come with a nice warranty too...
