Hi all

On the journey into work I heard a tapping noise coming from drivers side rear wheel - this increased with speed. New tyres all round and thought I'd perhaps got a chip/small stone trapped in the tread. Went into work and forgot about it...still doing it all the way home on all different road surfaces and at all speeds >15mph. Checked and no stones or anything trapped in tread as far as I can tell. I've never had to replace wheel bearings before. Is this the first sign they are on the way out? I thought whaen they were ready to be replaced you heard a knocking noise when you turned the car.

Ta for any advice.

What car is it?

Does it have drums or discs on the back?

You've just had tyres fitted? Are all wheel bolts/nuts present and correct? Handbrake cable is suitably secured up out the way?

Driveshaft on the rear?

TBH though, you could answer all those questions, and without having a look, no-one's going to be able to 100% diagnose it.
MK4 Golf Gti...I know the sttest GTi etc etc.

Drums on back - tyres fitted at VW garage - nuts all present.

Think the handbrke cable is fine..looked underneath and I'm not dragging anything along the ground.

I would have thought it would have been humming before you get the tapping grinding noises, CV joints cause noise on turning and wheel bearings once they get bad happen all the time esp noticeable at low speed

This may sound stupid but I have had personal experience with fitters forgetting to tighten wheels up. They'll do them up with an air-gun then go off to get a torque wrench & get distracted or something. End result is wheel is only just more than finger tight so after a few miles the wheel can start to move back & forth against the studs/bolts, that could explain your noise.

Check if bolts/nuts are done up.
