...should I expect this to be a nightmare journey tomorrow morning (on average)?

Should I find an alternative route?

There are roadworks at the Hatfield Tunnel, as you probably know, which can get a bit snarled, but usually keep moving. Northbound in the morning should be OK, I think... I don't usually go much north of Biggleswade, but up to there it is not more nightmare-ish than any other road full of Great British Drivers.

I drive up as far as the Bedford turn (A421? Don't know, just know the road!) regularly and the road is almost always free-flowing from Hatfield northwards.

Subject to accidents should be fine, apart from a queue at the Black Cat roundabout.

If you were travelling southbound during rush hour definately yes, but northbound should be ok barring unforseen accidents etc.

Expect long delays at the black cat roundabout, especially if you are going during what is perceived as the ruch hour. I have been stationary about a mile from this pain before now. I dont think there is an easier way to do this, you could avoid it by going M1 M1-A1 link road, but it will add so many miles to your journey its silly

What time are you driving up? Left Baldock yesterday morning just before 8:30 and drove up the A1 to the A14 and didn't hit one bit of traffic, even at the Black Cat.

If you do get stuck at the Blackcat, turn left just after the S-bend (there are signs saying no entry except for bus'es and Motorbikes but I've never been caught) follow the road down, turn left follow the road left again and turn left onto the old A428 and get on the Blackcat from that way thumbup
