I was listening to his breakfast show and he is doing some children in need auctions. Well they have a drive 9 Ferraris over 48 hours or something auction which sounds great. There are 9 places available and bids are up to 60 grand as I write.

What a load of bks as only those who can already afford to buy a Ferrari can enter. Why not do a text competition where it costs a pound per entry then it gives everyone a fair chance but as it is is it just a willy waving contest. I turned it off.
I would kill to get the chance to do this but doing it this way is very wrong.

I never listen. It's an auction for the very rich regardless of what they offer. Oh and Chris Evans is f******g annoying too.

You would kill but there is no way it would raise as much money so quickly. It'll raise 400k in under an hour. No way would a text competition do that, though they are doing a text in to be at the dinner on the Saturday night. Also, if I was lending a multi million pound car I'd rather it was driven by someone who bid 60k to drive it rather than anyone who entered a quid competition as they may have a little more respect for it.

You can always put your bid in and see if you want it more than someone else.

They are doing some text entries for other competitions...

These competitions are for things that money can't buy (Well it obviously can). I think it's a great idea and i'm looking forward to seeing the videos from the day.

You've got to give it to Chris - he is allowing strangers to drive his multi million pound car collection all in the name of charity

In all seriousness though, why would it need to give everyone a fair chance of winning? AFAIK Evans gives the cars etc free of charge and the winners are quite probably the same year on year, its aim is to raise as much as possible for Children in Need not to fall foul of the competition commission because Eddie from Grimsby didn't recieve a text confirmation.

Oh and ask yourself this, you are giving 9 of your Ferrari Collection to total strangers, would you like them to go to people with £100k + to blow on a couple of days in the countryside or to some dumb innit from West Yorkshire with a ill fitting cap and faux limp?

No chavs up ere m8. there all darn sarf supping lager shandies.

Anymore lip from yoo and I'll set m' whippet on yer.

On topic, it was the same when Wogan held these auctions, only the super rich would win, so pretty pointless listening apart from to hear how easily some people and their cash are parted for the feel good factor of everyone hearing their name and amount of surplus cash they have on radio.

It's a bold move to criticise someone trying to realise as much cash for charity as he can by trusting strangers with his multi-million pound car collection.

I wish I could afford it, unfortunately I can't, that doesn't mean I'm going to get upset on the Interwebs about it and call it a load of rubbish just because I'm too pikey to take part.

Agreed. Not sure where the entertainment value is in listening to people with lots of cash spending it.

Unfortunately for you (and me) I'd say Chris' main aim is to raise as much money for Children in Need in as short a time possible (and do 'good radio'), rather than to give you a shot in his car collection.

He's doing it all wrong.

I was recently up at the RAC for a Demelza auction. They know how to put on an auction.

Get a bunch of people to turn up in ballgowns and dinner jackets. Treat them to a slap up meal and intentionally get them drunk. Then have very nice looking hosts and hostesses with pretty smiles go round asking for silent bids for various donated items.

I was informed the next day by courier post that I'd successfully bid to be crew on a trip on a round the world racing yacht, and I'd also sucessfully bid to learn how to make belguim chocolates at a posh london hotel.

My wife who was also heavily hung over and looking sheepish was trying to argue that I'd forced her into the bidding.

Thats how you do an auction. frown

Spot on.

Full respect to Chris Evans. he is a committed Petrol head, got a great collection and allowing strangers to drive HIS cars in the name of Charity. It is a cracking package over the two days and really wish I could afford to spend £40k+ on a 2 day trip like this.

Its funny on PH that every time Chris Evans is mentioned people are very quick to criticise him.

Yep, quickest way to get me to turn the radio off. As others have said, only those who could afford this sort of thing anyway get to win it. I don't have thousands spare for anything, leave alone charity blowouts. I could find 10 or 20 (or maybe 100 or 200) quid for entry into a draw to win that sort of thing though.

You do understand the concept of an AUCTION, right?

I am not exactly upset mate - check my garage wink

What I am saying is it does not make for good radio as basically it is a willy waving contest.

Haven't you kind of missed the point?

That point being to raise as much money as possible for charity, thereby an auction being the best way of doing that.

It's not about willy waving or even entertainment really, it's about raising money for C.i.N.

I'll admit to listening thinking "wish I could afford that" but I certainly don't begrudge them doing it just because I can't.

If it bothers you that much, work harder so you can afford it one day.

I've got no problem with the auction - it's beyond my means and that's life. At least the money bid actually gets to Children in Need.
I dislike the text competition approach where about 30% of the money goes to whoever hosts the premium rate number - I'd guess they turn a very healthy profit on this. Surprised the BBC can't find a company which will waive all or most of their fees for providing a premium rate text service.
