Get in go reliabilty V running costs - Bargain Barge

Dilema time
I'm after something to smoke about in cheaply over the winter, a few ski trips, & general running about up & down the country for work. All in probably 10k miles worth of driving between now & spring. I've done just about every variaton of car known to man, from my guzzling Landcruiser (used for towing I hasten to add) to an eco miser Audi A2 Tdi & everything in between.
However - I aboslutely detest & loathe cars that go wrong!!!!!! regardless of how cheap they are to run.
Wallet says: buy something that does 50mpg plus, eg an VW/Audi Tdi, I don't do French, but then the wifes VW PD is forever falling to bits & I'm always having to do something on it. Engine wise its great it does do 50mpg, but the rest of it you would have thought was built by the Chinese on a Friday its utterly crap!
Sensible head says: I already have my Landcruiser it's a 4.2td, its done nearly 26k miles of towing this year alone & has not missed a beat once! its now on 205k. However it stuggles to do 30mpg on a good day, usually more like 25mpg. Yet I know it wont go wrong & there is an awful lot to be said for that, its pretty comfy, has all mod cons, get in a go anywhere, decent range between fills, just a basic oil service every 8k miles, thats all I have to do. Do I live with the utteryly trustworthy comfy go anywhere Landcruiser & blow the extra £'s on fuel..... goes off to do calculation......
10,000 miles / 25 mpg = 400 gallons * 4.54 = 1816 L of fuel @ £1.25L = £2270
So an ecomiser (and possible nightmare VAG timebomb)that does 50mpg will save me £1135 in 10k miles yes? Or will it?
Or suggest something thats vaguely eco but wont ever go wrong! Post up what you've got that would fit the bill.
