Evening all,

I've been thinking about getting a car for winter, I want a 4 wheel drive, apart from that no other criteria. I have been looking at the usual landies, shoguns etc but I'm not all that keen on 4x4's.
I drove a v70 2.0 auto yesterday and was very impressed with the comfort and practically of it, I then remembered a guy I know who has an xc70. I'm now sold on getting a Volvo AWD of some sort, but not sure which.
So far I have seen 850 awd, 850 r awd, v70 r awd, v70 awd and the xc70. All of them are within budget and insurance is affordable, although the 'r' versions are at the top limit of my insurance funds.
I know the PH answer would be v70r awd, but I'm slightly concerned about running costs. Ideally I want to learn more about wielding a spanner with this car, and whilst a volvo might not be the best choice, I'm prepared to give it a go.
I have upto 2k to spend, and have seen all the cars mentioned within this budget.
If you were in my shoes, what would you buy?

Thanks
