Just had a phone call from my Father who yesterday discovered a puncture in his right rear tyre and went to a generic tyre place. The puncture was caused by a nail in the side wall so they fitted a replacement tyre, while it was on their lift my father noticed a split in the left rear and asked them to replace that too. They had to order this other tyre in.

So today he went back to have the tyre he ordered fitted, only to be told by the guy who looked at his car that he needed a new left rear tyre (fitted by them yesterday) and 2 new front tyres (both of which have done less than 6000 miles). Even when he told the guy that they replaced one tyre yesterday he was adamant that the tyre they replaced was well worn (it had the stickers still on when he collected it yesterday I saw them).

How many people do these useless muppets actually manage to rip off in their working week?

Loads.

The same speedy type chaps tried this on with me a few years back.

Lots of teeth sucking about needing new brake pads on this etc etc.

They had been fitted by another branch of said rapid fitters less than a year earlier.

At a time when the guaranteed to change the pads for free as long as you owned the car, or within however many months.

I said nothing and let them change the pads.

The amusing bit was watching the guys face when I presented the receipt from the other branch when he asked for payment.

Apparently my reg hadn't appeared on their database, nor my address and I really should have said. Well you see, that was because I moved and took the daft personal reg off the car after having it a couple of months. (The car, not the reg)

When I asked for the old pads back, they had lost them. Surprising that.

fkers.

Tell them to replace it and that you will keep the old(1 day old)one. You only had it fitted yesterday so they can pick up the tab.

Name and shame rules.

Sometimes this becomes a bit of a mockery.

I am still amazed that people take their cars there, after all the media coverage and reputation issues they have.

It is just one of the unwritten rules of life to me

- Watch where you are going
- Be polite to others
- Never, Ever go to (that garages that fits things quite rapidly) under any circumstances, even if the work is free, ever
- Always say please and thankyou

Maybe soon they will run out of victims.

I thought the replaced the right rear yesterday and he went in for the left rear today. And they told him the left rear needed replacing today, which it did, that is what he'd gone in for.

The fact he tred to sell two fronts, well that is what they try to do. But he wasnt saying the tyre from yesterday was worn out overnight as you suggest.

I would literally rather hire a car, and in fact have done a number of times, rather than end up doing this.

He did say that the right rear needed replacing today, despite it being a day old.

I had a local MoT station (that also happened to sell tyres/exhausts/etc) try something similar on with me.

Took a car in for MoT and was told the rear tyres had failed on tread depth. Now, I am well aware of the tyre laws - I have to be for work. Admittedly the rear tyres were low on tread, but certainly not illegal. I then asked him to show me the tyres, because I thought they were legal. The garage owner looked rather surprised and red in the face when I produced a tread-depth gauge and found both tyres had at least 2.5mm across the tyre. As they reported other faults with the car (headlights not in alignment, front CV's split, plus other minor work), I told him I had no intention of paying for the failed MoT as I had no faith in the tester's ability to actually conduct an MoT in accordance with the rules. He started to argue and then promptly shut up when I mentioned that I intended to also report the matter to VOSA.

Eventually it passed MoT elsewhere with just a split in the exhaust - the headlights and CV boots were fine.

Did you still follow it with VOSA though?

In any case, drop trading standards a line, just a short message, it migth do some good in the long run.
On the plus side, the group is so heavily in debt that the private equity company owning it has put it up for sale. There are some rumours it'll be bought by either Michelin or Bridgestone (Michelin already owns ATS).

Lets hope that if they are bought out the company changes how it goes about things.

What's the point though? I mean tyres/brakes/etc to tend to wear out, things need replacing and so on... so surely if they were honest they'd still have enough work to do? confused

yes

I don't have very much money to my name at the moment - but it would be less than the cost of fixing the bodge job work if they do any job, or the hassle of trying to fend them off telling me I need 8 new shock absorbers, 4 new steering wheels and a replacement gold plated windscreen...

Dad went home and contacted trading standards, they have asked him to put it in writing. The firm, despite its reputation, does have a very strong brand in that area and if (as pointed out in this thread) they went about their business being a little less pushy and only advising on things that needed doing their reputation and subsequent income would improve massively.
