Driving home today, I was on the A419 going north. Anyone that knows the road, knows it's a cracking bit of fast duel carridgeway, lots of vis, wide lanes and even the truckers don't elephant race too much.

Well, about halfway along, I noticed a big build up of traffic, which is quite unusual even on a Friday before 4ish, and after a few miles of nose to tail traffic, it became apparent that there was a slow moving vehicle in the inside lane up ahead. All the trucks were pulling out to go round it, and I was fully expecting to see a tractor or somthig similar...

Oh no, it's some dopey bint in an Astra estate, with two kids and the mandatory "BABY ON BOARD" sticker, doing 30mph on a national speed limit duel carridgeway!!! The conditions couldn't have been any better, dry, clear and light traffic.

Now I know people will say it's a limit, not a target blah blah blah, but the utter mayhem she was causing was unreal, she had managed to create her very own rolling traffic jam!

Im sorry, but if you don't have the confidence or ability to drive somwhere near the speed limit where conditions are perfect, you should NOT be on the road, let alone have two kids with you. From what I could see there was nothing wrong with her car, she was just totally oblivious to the mayhem she was causing, even with numerous people blowing thier horn at her etc... IMHO she was in more danger going 30 than she would have been just keeping up with the inside lane traffic, which is generally doing about 56mph.

Shocking!

Maybe her car was broken and she was nursing it home? Slipping clutch, over heating, stuck in 2nd gear?

Exactly.

Op, you got passed her and went on your merry way. It doesn't sound like she swerved to keep you behind, so what's the problem? I doubt you really knew what was up.

Also, why do some people really struggle to navigate around something that is going slower than you want to? If there is a slow car infront you pass it. Why do some find this so hard to do in a safe manner?

I'm glad that with all of the apparent carnage going on, you still had time to analyse her car in such detail. How about looking at the road ahead?

Given it's a duel carriageway I'm surprised he didn't slap her car with a glove and demand satisfaction!

Some of us have a bit of spare mental capacity, and don't have to transfix on one thing. And generally, if I have ever had to limp a car home/ to a place of safty, the hazard warning lights would be on, so people would at least have a clue that there is a slow moving obstruction that could cause a problem, ie people coming up behind a car doing 30Mph on a NSL duel carridgeway.

Also the fact that she was sat about 1/4" away from the windscreen, and there were no odd noises, loud revving, fluids or bits dropping off the car would provide a reasonalbe indication that the car was ok.

The point I am getting at is that driving at 30Mph on a NSL bit of road : a) Frustrates people, b) places the person driving at 30 in a fair amount of danger, would YOU do 30Mph along the motorway?

Excuse the "Bug", obviously should have read "big", the joys of typing on an iPhone!

Sounds like her Astra had gone in to limp-home mode, which is pretty typical for Astras.

Clearly something wrong with the motor or maybe she'd just been told her dad had died and was upset - either way it didn't stop you getting where you needed to be.

Just to clarify I wasn't upset/angry etc, just shocked at what I saw. I was more concerned for her safty than anything, as it would be easy for someone not paying attention to run into the back of her.

Im afraid I tend to agree with the OP.

If you can't handle certain types of driving environments, don't get yourself into them and don't hold up the rest of the world whilst you're at it.

No the NSL is not a target, but there is an acceptable speed to travel at and I would consider travelling at less than half the limit to be dangerous. (Unless you have flashy spinny warning lights etc as a tractor or other slow moving vehicle would).

OP you are a clown - I was once reduced to 20mph on a clear motorway and there was nothing wrong with my car, it just couldn't go any faster. A Fiat 126 with 2 passengers, a steep uphill section and a headwind. I never thought to put my hazards on, why should I have? My car wasn't suffering a mechanical defect of any sort.

So don't assume to know why someone is driving slower than you want them to.

Whilst we're about inappropriate driving or undertaking unnecessary risks on the road.

I collected the kids from school this afternoon and was disappointed (the shock has warn off now after seeing it so many times here) to see the woman in the car next to me load 4 kids along the back seat, and another in the front.

The child in the front seat was at least belted up (sadly the child was only around 7 or 8 so will have died in a horrific neck squelching way if they crash), and the kids in the back clearly couldnt all be belted - so NONE of them bothered.

Sadly, the biggest surprise for me was that she WASNT on the phone as she drove off rolleyes

Plod can give points for going too slow as well as too fast.

If you had been spotted at 20mph on a motorway there would have been a good chance of getting 3 points.

You say you weren't angry or upset, but you hinted at her having a lack of mental capacity in your post above? confused

Somehow, I doubt you were concerned for her safety.

Even better is the fact that you said there were no odd noises or fluids dripping from the car. Just how much time did you spend analysing her vehicle?

I'm glad you were paying attention.

So why are bikes of less than 125cc banned off motorways then?

Hazards aren't just for mechanical defects. If you're at the back of a jam on a motorway, do you put them on? It's a helpful warning to the people behind who aren't switched on enough to notice a queue.

In answer to the OP, i was told that it's illegal to go to slow without good reason.

I would imagine 5-10 seconds as I went slowly past, behind a motorhome.. It is fairly obvious (considering I am an aircraft engineer, and keen car builder) to anyone with a small amount of technical knowledge, that a fluid leak so severe, exhaust fallen off, etc etc, or any other major defect bar an ECU issue etc, would have a quite noticeable sign of somthing happening.
