Your car, the one you drive (multi car owners, think default car option) is it your mate? To qualify this i mean do you walk up, get in, and think "hello fella/bird we've got a job to do so lets get on with it, don't let me down now, because i'm talking to you in my mind...."
(TVR owners its already a given

)I don't think I would consider my car a mate. I don't have any real attachment to my company car as it is replaced every six months anyway. However I do feel an attachment to my old mini as I know it inside out and have invested lots of time and effort into making it what it is. I don't think I'd ever forgive myself if i sold it.
I like to think of the impreza as my secret mistress, I spend all week in a dull diesel insignia (company car) and then arrive home on friday night, sneak into the garage and there she is, waiting for me. I spend quite a bit on her, go on weekends away with her but ultimately have to go back to safe and reliable insignia when monday comes around
I have been known to say 'ooh, hello baby' when getting in the impreza too
After reading the above, its quite miraculous I've had relationships with real life women eh?

At times, yes. I talk to it if it's running out of fuel and I have no idea where the nearest petrol station is ('come on, not much further now, just keep going'), and sometimes if it's done a long run faultlessly I might pat the steering wheel and say 'well done', but I'd never give a car a gender or, heaven forfend, a name.
Likewise the car doesn't get named, or become male/female - always thought that was a bit sad. But it does get a friendly tap on the steering wheel after a long run, a sort of "thanks for not letting me down" tap.
Our family has grown with the car always there - we got it just after our youngest was born, and since then, we've had another boy who's now almost 1. I used to be the sole driver, and tweaked and modified it a little to my liking, but now my Mrs finally passed her test she's using it 90% of the time. It feels a bit like the family dog to me - it belongs to everybody, but it and I have a special quiet bond; I don't know, it's getting a bit sad now! I always think of the relationship the main character has with his dog in the film Marley & Me.

It's my sanctuary.
I love driving it from North Wales after a weekend hiking in the mountains, either in the dead of night or very early morning at warp factor or simply cruising. It's a precious time when there are very few cars on the road, not to mention old bill. It's a time when I can think and also empty my mind and enjoy the twists and turns, full on straights and the kinetic and mechanical sensations that come from driving for pleasure.
It's a machine, I wouldn't want it to have human characteristics as it would just end up pissing me off.

I don't tend to give my cars people names, but I do refer to them by nicknames (Old Reliable was my last Volvo 850 for example) and I'll talk to them from time to time.
I got some funny looks as I had to drive my friend's E30 (used to be mine) home one night and as I climbed in I said "Hello old friend" and stroked the steering wheel a bit.
Funny looks indeed.
