I have recently aquired a 2002 reg Astra Coupe 2.2, with Phillips 4-CD Autochanger in the glove box.

It hasn't been run for a few months as it was sat at the sales garage, but everything else works perfect. When inserting the cassette of CDs, it will randomly tell me "check disk 1" and "check disk 3" so I will take the cassette out again, check they are inserted properly, they are, re-insert, and it will decide that maybe disk 2 isn't in properly. If I then try and select the apparently incorrectly inserted disk, it says "disk error" even though its in correctly.

When I do find a CD that is detected correctly, it will skip, sometimes for upto 10 or 20 seconds at a time, throughout the whole CD, every 5 or 10 seconds. Sometimes it plays right through, but this is usually once the car is warmed up, but sometimes just works fine from cold startup.

If I set off to work in the morning, and select maybe the one only CD that decides to work, it will skip badly for the first 5 mins, then gradually get slightly better. After 15mins of driving, usually it will play fine.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

It sounds suspiciously like it's broken.

Are you using 'proper' CD's or CD-Rs that you have created on your PC ? Lots of older units play up with CD-R's. I get exactly the symptoms you describe in my Omega, it was never designed to play CD-Rs.

Sometimes due to condensation on the CD lens, usually though this corrects once the car is warm inside.
It's also worth trying a CD lens cleaning disc before assuming it's bust.

My 51 plate Volvo plays CD-Rs on its 10 disk changer OK.

Who the hell still uses cd's!

Seriously dude get an ipod or a mp3 compatible head unit

I acquired a 10 disk sony changer unit a while back and
i wouldn't bother fitting it to a car of mine.

ipod and interface gives me more choice than i could use
in a trip round europe and no disks or cases cluttering
things up

I don't mean to demean in any way just take the opportunity to
upgrade to something a lot more convenient for not a lot of outlay.

Some CD-R's have compatibility issues.

with the warming up being mentioned, I would go for condensation on the head, I have the same issue with the Audi because some stupid German decided to mount the thing 1/2" from the rear panel with no insulation so it gets very cold! frown

If it's in the glove box then I would imagine it would warm up quicker, but your still likely to have the same issue!

perhaps have a cd lens cleaner in CD1 slot, so it pulls this in first, wipes the condensation off the head then works ok?

Cheers guys- I'm actually in the process of choosing an iPod compatible CD player to slot in, need to find out what I'll need to ensure the steering wheel buttons still work etc.

I just hate having things on my car that don't work!

Is it vertically mounted? I found mine failed like that so I re-seated it horizontally and it worked after that without any problem.
