Two New AMG Black Series On The Way

AMG boss says Mercedes is soon to reveal two new hardcore models

The last Black Series offering was the SL
The last Black Series offering was the SL
AMG boss Ola Kallenius revealed to the press at the LA motor show that two AMG models will get treated to a hardcore 'Black Series' makeover in the 'very near future'.

Kallenius didn't go into any further details about the new cars, but prototypes of what could be a Black Series C63 AMG have been spotted testing in Germany.

If that is the case it could be a last hurrah for the 6208cc naturally aspirated V8. The prototype doing the rounds is a non-facelift car and Mercedes is getting a refreshed C-class ready for some time in 2011, and the new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 is already being phased into Merc's AMG range.

As for the identity of the other AMG Black Series model? Your guess, as ever, is as good as ours... The E-class saloon maybe? Or maybe the E-class coupe? We like the sound of that...

So is an AMG like a 'S' model Audi and a Black series like and 'RS' Audi model?

I can't help thinking they should make all their high perf cars AMG and stop messing aorunf with confusing other types.

some AMG models still keep the lovely 6.2L engine wink
so one of the new black-series could have that 6.2 V8

I wouldn't say that's quite the case, more how a Scuderia is to a Ferrari F430. Thats how i see it anyway. A C63 AMG would be directly comparable to an RS4, not an S4, therefore a C63 AMG BLACK would be above that.

Agreed, the Black Series is a whole echelon above the likes of 'standard' RS and M Power.

My guess is that the first Black Series model will be based on the C-Class coupe which is in the works with a price of over £100k and the second will be an SLS Black Series costing more than £250k.

I think it is like an RS from an image point of view. The BMW M, Audi S and Merc AMG brands have been diluted by branded body-kits, wheels and S-line and M-sport packages. Audi have sensibly kept the RS brand un-diluted by the marketing department. Merc are trying to create a similar halo brand with 'AMG Black'. I've said here before that BMW desperately need something similar as almost every 318d now seems to have an M badge somewhere on it. There are plenty of members on this forum who describe their car in their garage as 'BMW 3 series M-sport'.

E-Class Coupe Black Edition I am told by Affalterbach.

There are no other plans for Coupe or Cabrio 63 AMG's so I am led to believe. This would therefore tie in.

At the heart of the go-fast Gullwing is a reworked version of the SLS’s M159 engine. The 6.2-litre V8, already far removed from similar-sized and configured units found in other AMG models, kicks out 563bhp and 479lb ft of torque in standard guise.

For the SLS AMG Black Series, however, its reserves are set to be raised beyond 600bhp and 500lb ft through the inclusion of a larger air manifold, higher compression ratio, reprofiled camshafts and other unspecified tweaks.

“We’re not at the limit with what’s out there the moment. There’s still a good deal more to come from the engine,” says AMG engine boss Friedrich Eichler. “We’re saving the best until last.”

The uprated V8 will continue to place drive through the SLS’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to the rear wheels, with a mechanical locking differential set to be included as part of the upgraded driveline package.

Despite running similar gearing, the added engine reserves, together with detailed aerodynamic tweaks and a 50kg reduction in kerb weight, promise to bring the 0-62mph time down from the standard car’s claimed 3.8sec to under 3.5sec, while raising top speed from 195mph to 208mph
also read somwhere that they will try to get it some hefty 300kg ligther...but maybe that was ment for the race SLS? anyways sounds good to me.

so also the C and SLS black-series will keep the 6.2 engine...so sweet.
