My collegue has told me when she tries to start her car, it tell her it doesn't recognise the key. I had a thought that disconecting the battery, then reconnecting my reset it all and allow it to work?

1/ Possible and worth a try?

2/ Not a chance, don't bother.

3/ Don't do this, you'll set the alarm off, a SWAT team will automatically be called and hunt you down

There's a point where more gizmo's become a pain.

This crosses that line I feel.

I have this problem on the vx. Sometimes the car doesn't start on the first try, the EML comes on, and then when i try to start it again it's fine. Diagnostic jobbie says something about not recognising key transponder confused. If i delete the code it just happens again a few days later.
I'm not too fussed about it but would be nice to not have it keep happening.

Probably a fault with key/car, the transponder in the key sends a signal to the car, either the key isn't sending it or the car isn't receiving it correctly.

My Wifes Golf Mk4 does this with one of the keys. You can unlock the car and turn the engine with the key but it will come up with 'Immobiliser activated' and the engine turn itself off after a few seconds.

Other key works fine.

I did some digging, the local VW place can use VAGCOM to try to reprogram the faulty key but it may jusst be faulty in which case its a new transponder.

It's an 05 scenic. Just had a look, and the groundman doesn't have the right size spanner anyway, so can't even try.

bigdods, thanks for that - i'll tell her to try a spare key.

It's probably either the ignition card or the reader that is faulty. It's common on all card key renaults. Problem is the card is pretty delicate (had one customer complain after hers wouldn't work after using it to scrape ice off the windscreen!) Have they the second card or just the one as replacements from renault are around £200. If they have the 2nd card try that and it it doesn't work it will more than likely be the card reader.

Try the spare card obviously if that works you know where the fault is.

Try swapping the battery first, they're only a couple of quid. Secondly it might need re-tuning in if it's been flat for ages. I can't remember if this is a DIY job or if the car needs plugging in.

Lastly mobile phones can sometimes block the signal if she's trying hands free. I always used to have mine in the opposite pocket to my phone. Also sounds daft but ppl genuinely do this check there isn't another reno in the house hold i.e. she's got the right key.

She's not got a spare, and she has tried the battery.

Looking like something is broken then!! Was hoping there might be a quick fix for her. She has booked it at renault now to see whats wrong.
