OK I am bored at work and browsing the Classifieds I have found many supercars for not alot of money: 997t, Vaquish's etc, so heres the challenge:

Find a car year 2003+, with a rediculous price tag when new, find the same model and preferably spec car for sale today with a significant price decrease. Then post the new price, todays price and money lost through depreciation, heres my example:

  • Maybach New: £260k
  • Maybach Now:£89k
  • Depreciation: £171k
Links to the cars for sale today will also make the thread more enjoyable, note that I used the Maybach as I wish to exclude this from the game simply because its a well known (easy) depreciating car.

I think the thread has a potential to unearth some little gems, The Winner will be the person with the highest Depreciation figure smile

The winner is going to be the VW Phatone.

EDIT
Here's a V10 one for £14k
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2211352.htm

V6s can be had for under ten grand!

Epic depreciation, but not a patch on the Maybach above. Shocking!
Any enormous, fully loaded luxury barge is going to suffer massively.

Surely it should be a percentage?

Would it not be a fairer contest if the depreciation was measured as a percentage of the original price rather than an actual figure?

Not that I can be arsed to calculate it.

I think the Mayback still wins..in % terms and absolute!

To be fair that mayback quoted has been vandalised so I'm not sure it's a fair submission.

There is one with less miles at a VW main dealer for under £12k!

IIRC adjusting for inflation the biggest depreciator was the Aston Martin Virage

£120,000 at launch in 1988, down to about £35,000 in the teeth of the 1990 recession. They bounced back up for a bit, and now they're a £25k bargain, but people lost a hell of a lot of money on those.

I always think of this when watching Dragons' Den. It really puts those folks into perspective when they can afford to effectively bin £171k on a daily hack.

Given how 'well' some of their investments have done it's clearly not the only thing they can afford to bin money on.

The Ferrari 456 is quite a good example of this. You could spec them to comfortably over £170,000 new and you can pick one up for about £30,000 now. If I had the means to run it I'd sell my spleen to fund buying one...

Indeed. I might apply and say I'll make them £150k better off in 3 years, as well as making 'em look like James Bond. Then cancel the new Maybach order and turn up in a £5k E38 750iL (with a private plate). They probably wouldn't notice the difference.
