Having just turned 21 i'm after a faster diesel than the 1.6 zetec s i currently own...nothing over insurance group 10/12 or over £9k for the car.....hopefully newer than 07 and with less than 30k on the clock, also looking for a hatch back, any ideas would be welcome

Don't read too much into insurance groups, try getting quotes on whatever you fancy. Sometimes the group doesn't make much sense against the price. For example the Saxo VTR is insurance group 7 (from memory) and I'm betting that isn't cheap to insure any more.

How about a Mondeo ST tdci, Skoda is a good shout too, all the VAG group have quick diesels, Golf GT Tdi, Leon FR (would be my VAG choice), Leon 130 tdi is actually decently spec'd and can be mapped to 170bhp fairly cheaply. Astra SRI comes in 150bhp diesel guise.

In fact most groups have dirty diesels that would fit your criteria.

Also the previous shape SEAT Ibiza came in FR (130bhp) and Cupra (160bhp) variants.
You may be able to get a BMW 120d for that money too, though low mileage ones are pricey.

Don't forget that diesels can be chipped to give a good 25% power increase, although it may have a large impact on insurance costs.

Check and see if the bluefin upgrade is available now for the 1.6 TDCI engine.

You would be circa 110 bhp in a nice small car which I found really chuckable.

It might keep you happy for 6-12 months until insurance gets cheaper?
