Good Crisp Audio in a RRS - what do i need?
Discussion
Recently purchased an 07 range rover sport with the top end stereo but i have not listened to it yet (pick up car on sat) however i do like to listen to music loudly when doing my weekly 100 mile commute and as I have that huge boot I thought I could do with a removable sub box or something? now i am far from a "rude boy" i just enjoy crisp good sound with a nice deep baseline. Can anyone advise me of what i should / shouldnt buy? or maybe the current stereo will be enough. Thanks
Think long and hard before you go about upgrading your 'premium' sound system. Give the in built system a good audition, and only if you really can't bear it look a the upgrade route.
I say this because modern in-built premium sound systems take a huge amount of money, effort and expertise. A premium sound system is likely to consist of 8-12 speakers, an inbuilt sub woofer for bass, and a central amplifier with around 6 channels. The headunit will also be bespoke and intergrated with the vehicles electonics as a whole.
There are ways and means to do what you want. You can get digital processors that take the audio signal from your standard headunit, process them, and pass them on to an aftermarket amplifier. You could also rip the whole stereo out and install a new headunit, but you could lose integration and functionality.
Finally, new speakers will need to be carefully placed and installed if they're to sound any better than the stock kit. Amplifiers also need to be installed with care.
All in all, you could buy kit to outperform the standard system for perhaps £1k-£2k, but that's fitting it yourself. Taking it to an audio installer would be more like £5k for decent kit, well installed.
See www.talkaudio.co.uk for more info, or the owners club site may have more information on your specific car, and perhaps any tricks to install just a replacement sub woofer for example.
