Northants are apparently spreading a mix of salt and treacle this year in the hope the salt stays put on the road surface... good chance of staying put on your chassis too?

That's just great. Beats me why they bother with the damn stuff, all it does is rot anything it comes into contact with, leave the roads greasy for days, pollute watercourses and cost a fking fortune.

How about something along the lines of a sticker on every petrol pump saying - "It gets icy in winter, please drive accordingly" instead?

yikes This is a joke right???

and why should this stuff stick to the road and not be flicked around the place to stick to every other thing passing by.

If you had the need to get a 'rogue sticky substance' off something, the first thing you'd do was try and freeze it so it became brittle and could be removed wobble

I dont know what the answer is, but this doesnt sound like it!

Ignore me. A quick google shows that this isn't the case in the UK as it's a fairly recently approved additive for road salt. It does seem as though it's been used in North America for quite a while though.

As far as I know Leeds and the surrounding area (and elsewhere) have been testing this on an off for a number of years - there was an outcry about it making the roads slippy and a few amusing tales about it bringing sheep onto the roads because they liked to lick the salty sugar mix.

My experience is that it makes cars dirty quickly and doesn't seem to be any more effective that regular stuff in my limited testing.

The molasses stops the salt from blowing away or getting dusted away before it can be effective. The concentration is very low in relation to the salt. I'd rather the council spread something on the roads which can be easily washed off my car, and prevents black ice, than risk driving in the dark, on a surface which may get very slick, without any warning, and is nigh on impossible to spot before your actually on it.

Sounds delicious. I may pinch a cup full from one of those yellow containers.

They were saying on a recent news bulletin that it was inherently less corrosive than standard salt, but I fail to see how that could be?
