I'm supposed to be picking up a car I've bought down there, and then driving it back to newcastle. Getting the train there but obviously the conditions leave much to be desired.

I'm even wondering whether to call it off, just wondering if anyone has any feedback as to what the roads are like between Newcastle and York?

I should imagine the A1 will be relatively free, but getting to the A1 could be an issue, and the same applies for getting into York once you get back. If it was me,i would postpone it

I'm supposed to be getting the train to york and then driving back.

At the moment if it doesn't snow much more it might be ok but some of the weather forecasts are giving conflicting info.

Apparently the A1 has been anything but free these past few days, closing and opening all the time to get wrecked cars off the road. Driving home the other night I saw a trashed Corsa on the southbound side of the road, which had caused a tailback earlier in the day. When it's flowing it's slow if steady progress, but it only takes one numpty to get it closed for a few hours. Best to check traffic reports before heading out!

The main roads around York are fine, its the back roads that are not gritted and causing problems.
I drove Portsmouth to Malton last night, and only encountered snow on the road as i entered Malton.

Yeah its not so much down there I'm concerned about, all the bad weather seems to be in Newcastle / Durham.

The issue isn't the roads - it's the halfwits who can't drive properly because the roads are suddenly the wrong colour.

Aye the standard of driving I see from some people beggars belief - how these people get licenses I'll never know.

The a1 should be ok, like others have said it's the side roads that are the issue. I'm in Middlesbrough and we've had fair amount of snow today, probably about 4 inches. Main roads are passable but side roads are a mare, my street is just one sheet of ice.

What car are you picking up?

My Dad is driving up from Middlesbrough to Newcastle right now, says he's crawling along the A1 at 20mph...

I just did east London to South Shields, no drama 70 ,all the way to York, then between that and 40 all the way from there, the roads are not bad but when it starts to snow visibility is the biggest problem I found.

Hmm, I'm leaning on the idea of saying to hell with it and just going... lets face it, its not like there's any best time to go in winter anyway.

I didn't think that geordies would turn soft at the sight of a little bit of snedge. Man up.

Been down to York this morning (from Hartlepool) using the A19 and it was a bit more tricky than it should have been in places but not impossible.

A1 has been fine south of newcastle up till now Paul. My girlfriend drove to Leeds on Friday with no issues. More snow is on the way but it doesn't look like it'll be as heavy as it has been. Good luck with the new motor. Looks great.

I've been on the A1 today and it was pretty bad, down to one lane and cars getting stuck on the slip roads to the Metro centre.

Heavy snow is forecast tonight and tomorrow.
