Please can someone settle an argument:

In very cold weather, is it better for your car to start it and leave it ticking over and warm up slowly or for you to start it and drive away straight away?

Most car manuals will say to drive away.

Personally I have the car running while clearing frost or snow then drive away.

It warms up quicker through use anyway.

Drive off straight away ,carefully warming engine up .....but Ford heated front screens

only work with engine running so will need a short while before able to see anything spin

....best to get that oil circulating round the engine ASAP.....tick over does not do that as well as driving off.....best to keep the revs down until the engine is fully warmed-up.....at least that is what I am told is best for a 911 and I believe that to be case for most cars....of course when there is a heavy frost you are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea...frown

leaving it idling will take ages to properly heat the engine up, it will not heat up the gearbox or diff oil too. if you can see out your screen, just drive off, but NEVER give it full throttle or go too far past 1/2 revs for a while, particularly in these sub-zero temps. at the moment i'm shifting gear between 2250-3000rpm depending if it's flat or a hill when then engine is particularly cold. on the flip side, don't shift too early because the engine will labour.

leaving it idling won't cause too much harm, but it's far more efficient and effective to just drive off. i wouldn't leave it idling for more than a minute or 2 if i didn't have to. but, as others have said, no harm doing so whilst you clear the screen.

Tip: Cars doors can be locked if you use the key rather than the remote. At leaston mine they can.

Does nobody have car pre-heating (standheisung)? Now is the time to gloat about it if you do biggrin.

I do 30 second tick-over, 1 min of manoevering it at low speed, drive slowly to the end of the road, wait a bit more, and then the usual warming up. My gearbox was like stirring ice for the first mile this morning, so i guess it's not a good idea to drive straight off.

Driv straight off. The car will get up to operating temperature quicker.
