Looking for a 4x4 for family duties. Got around £15k and settled on these two.

Love the better build and looks of the VW, but the CX-7 seems a bit of a bargain with all the toys as standard and you can easily pick one up for around £12k.

Recently discounted the Yeti, as they're still way too pricey and don't have the slightly more premium feel of these two (OK so CX-7 might be a little lacking in the department, but feel the value.)

Any thoughts, I'm all ears.

Seen a CX-7 parked up near here, it's a good-looking thing in the flesh - enough to have made me look it up previously.

Are you going to be off-roading? If you buy a Touareg you're paying for a lot of off-road hardware that may not be used.

Touareg - check for wet carpet in the front left footwell (remove all overmats and press-down hard on the carpet to check for damp - bulkhead drain channels can get blocked then flood the footwell and corrode the local electrics.

You will be raped when something goes wrong with the Touareg. My missus works for a VW main dealer and they can (and do) charge anything from £250 up to £400 a corner for new tyres, any work that is needed WILL cost you a fortune, not just may cost a fortune, WILL!! An oil change at a main dealer can be far, far into 3 figures, and if you have a Turbo Diesel, a replacement turbo (it will need one after about 100k miles) will set you back aroud £5k including fitting! There tends to be a story at every single VW dealer about someone that bought a Touarag and ended up with a vomit inducing bill for repairing one - just pop to your local one and ask, guarantee they will have a good story!!

On top of this, for £15k you won't get a fantastically spec'd car. Granted, the interior of even the base models are pretty plush, but they were designed to be top-end, Range Rover alternatives, and you won't get what they were designed to do for the money you're spending!

Not sure about the CX-7, never used or tried one. But please, please, please stick away from the VW unless you have considerable disposable income to spend on upkeep.

(If you do decide to go for a Touareg, pm me, I get commission!!!!)

Blimey, that's food for thought. I'd heard about turbo woes on the X5 and just assumed the VW would be pretty cheap to run all in all.

Not keen on the XC90, and the Tiguan looks a bit odd. Ideally want auto, though the CX-7 is manual only... Not fussed about petrol or diesel as mileage is relatively low.

like my CX 7 a lot. Road tax is high fuel consumption not great. But as a family car with a decent bit of poke it is fine.

Had mine 3 years and 30k.

Check for corroded alloys. Mine were repaced under warranty. I have also had new brakes as part of a service. Free as it was a Mazda mod. Check too the turbo. There is a replacement modded unit whic again i had under warranty.

Like. The rarity value, looks performance and toys.

Dint like. Depreciation, 10k service intervals, lack of back seat gear. Handbrake. The US spec ones have a much better electronic park brake.

I would have another but next time fancy possibly trading up to a RR or RR Sport.

The new CXs are all diesels. Very nice with a few more toys. A good looking alternative to other things out there. Not bad in the snow. Ive just been having a play. Its no off roader though.

As an alternative view I've had a 2005 Touareg TDi for the last 2 years. Had no problems with it whatsoever. It's a great car for my needs, and very comfortable for long journeys. Had 4 x 19" tyres replaced for £560 by Event Tyres. It needs servicing every 20,000 miles. After 20,000 miles I took it to main VW dealer in Surrey. They did the 60,000 mile service, oil change, brake fluid change, mot, for £340.

Despite all that it was an expensive car new, so you have to be prepared for a large bill now and again. My brother in law also has a V8 Touareg and is very happy with it.

I'll counter this by saying my Touareg has done 110k miles. It's had one problem, the air flow meter. £70 from VW.

It was serviced last Tuesday by the VW Audi specialist up the road. Labour, £45. Oil £38 (two cans Longlife3). VW Oil Filter, £4.

Tyres are £100 for Goodyear Wrangler.

Turbo's are not £5,000 - that's just total bks.

Same age and model as mine. Same bombproof build and reliabilty evident in mine.

My wheels are 17" and Goodyear are £412 for 4.

There isn't half some bks on forums from people who've never even sat in a specific car, let alone owned one.

I wouldn't have one on those grounds.

I dont think servicing on the CX is bad one thing you need to bear in mind is that the service history is electrnic. No service book. So look for receipts for work done.

I kind of like that people have to Google it.

Not a common car. Of the petrol models I think Mazda only imported about 1000 a year. It can make parts a problem. I had to wait a dayfor a new screen when it got cracked. I guess VW would have had one in stock.

Its got the Mazda 3 DISI engine so parts for that shouldn't be a problem.

The rear prop shaft bearing seems to be a common failure at around 60k miles on the Touareg.

A colleague has one and I vividly remember him being dismayed by the first service cost of over £500 when the salesman rolleyes had told him much less.

At 5yrs/80K miles it was poor to start from cold and the dealer took a grand off him for the glow-plug system - made no difference whatsoever. They then said it needed £3500 for a complete new fuel system. He took it a recommended indie and they said trying to diagnose the fault could take so many hours that just biting the bullet and replacing everything was probably the best thing to do.
