Saturday night, some tt rides his bike into the side of our 8 seater. No lights, no high viz, going the wrong way round a roundabout. Smacks his bike into the sliding door.

Gives a false name and address.

Took the bus into the bodyshop today and it needs a new sliding door - £600.

I want to remove the s face ranting

That £600 either comes out of the drivers pocket (who has done nothing wrong), out of mine, or out of my insurers pocket (and then of course, ultimately - out of mine).

I get that people will forever be lying scumbags but why should theis group of road users be completely untraceable?

Apart from war the most discussed topic in government in the last hundred years is whether or not cyclists need to be licenced.

The DVLA are :cesored: usless as they are without adding 90% of the population who can ride a bike to it. wink

why stop at cyclists? why not pedestrians? perhaps we should all have a reg plate tatooed on our forehead so we can't lie about our identity?

Because, generally speaking, If you get hit by a car you wouldn't ps off into nowhere... Or do quite as much damage.

agreed. should be licences for bicycles. also thinking about it, you could put a licence on shoes to stop people from running into things.

hang on no. burglars and people running into things could just go bare-foot.

make that a licence on feet, or stumps which could be used to walk.

its true.

drivers never do hit and runs, and bicyles weigh more than cars.

This has gone a bit Orwellian. hehe

Just had a mental image of a five year old being sent to prison for not having a licence to cycle without stabilizers.

Recently had two teenage lads on a tandem (random) ride into the back of my car at a fair rate - I don't think the brakes were up to the job of stopping the weight of two fairly tall lads going downhill. "Here we go" thought I, "I'll have trouble getting these guys to pay up for any damage", but I shouldn't have worried - front wheel and fork completely written off on the tandem, for one small black rubber mark on my rear bumper.

hehe Landcruisers rule!

'Tis an age-old problem though, with no easy solution as far as I can see.

If the DVLA are put in charge of it when the aformentioned generic five year old sends their licence off to declare a change from stabilized cycle and trke to bicycle they would mess it up and send them a type H licence. So they can't ride a bike any more but are can drive a tank. wink

What's to stop bycicles being registered at the local police station? Even kids bikes could be... who knows, it might even take the crime statistics down if stolen bikes were traceable. Who knows...

The price of the London "Boris Bike" scheme includes liability insurance, I was surprised but pleased to notice.

You mean like having say your post code stamped on it for example? Doesn't ever censored work. Cycle theft isn't considered a criminal offence by most Police officers I have delt with. I have had seven bikes stolen in the last ten years ranging from £1000 to £3000. No bikes have ever been recovered. The Police only ever visited me to take a statement when my front door was kicked in to take my bike from my kitchen. After the third bike was taken the houshold insurance said they could no longer cover them.

If someone took a £1000 car they'd have a county wide hunt backed up nation wide ANPR and a censored Helicopter if the car was spotted. A £1000 bike you get a crime number over the phone and leaflet about being a victim of crime in the post if you're lucky. I hope I catch the next cycle thief who dares cross my path. I will happilly take the law into my own hands as it obviously isn't safe in the hands of the Police.
