Angola Motorshow 2010
Discussion
Not sure how much interest there'll be in this, but last weekend I went along to the 2nd Angola Motorshow held just outside the capital city, Luanda.
A very basic affair with only 1 large hall (actually more like an aircraft hanger) and a dozen or so exhibitors, everything from car companies to tool and tyre suppliers.
The show cost 6 quid to enter and ran for 3 days, the highlight (allegedly) being the "sexy car wash contest"
Anyway, some pics:

Angola has several racetracks, including the Luanda Autodrome, allowed to lapse into disrepair, they are slowly being brought back into use... these are some of the cars of the first race series in the country.
6 rounds on a mix of circuits and street racing (street racing scenes are like WRC Portugal of old, no barriers etc etc)

Ford sell a huge number of vehicles in Angola, mostly American SUVs and Pick ups, the new Fiesta is the first small car on the market here... yours for 20k gbp or so

This is the Fusion, another new launch here... not seen one on the roads yet.

One of the biggest markets here is for cheap Chinese knock-off cars... this is a BYD F0, (BYD - Build Your Dreams are actually assembled here in Angola and, as such are cheap.... boy do they feel it, doors that don't close properly, trim that falls off, I dread to think what they drive like!

This is another BYD car, the F6. Complete with the nastiest leather you ever saw on the inside... it is cheap though!

BYD don't have it all their own way here though..... this is the Oting 4x4, a Nissan rip-off so porely done that the steering wheel still has a Nissan badge on it!! It too had doors that didn't close properly and a lovely 69hp engine!

Now this is more like it!!
Porsche have entered the market here in a big way in 2010, they have now opened an official dealership in the city and the whole range is available (the salesman I spoke to has just sold a GT3RS here) however the Cayenne Turbo S is far and away the biggest seller.
As an idea of price, a base 997 Carera 2 runs $125k USD

Toyota had the biggest stand at the show, with their entire range of 4x4s on display, from the base $101k Prado to the $135k VX-VR, this is possibly not surprising, as every second vehicle here seems to be a Prado.
They also had the best freebies!
Noticeably absent were Land Rover (they have a large dealership here) not sure why this would be, as they sell a lot of Range Rover Sports here.
Anyway, it was an interesting day out, like stepping back in time, nothing was cordonned off and we were actively encouraged to sit in all the vehicles etc.
Not sure it's worth a dedicated trip, but if you happened to be in the area LOL

Great pics and a great thread. How did you come to be visiting the Angola motorshow, then?
Those knockoff Aygos are just the start - they make fake Smarts, fake BMW X5s (that one might be by Wind actually) and many others. I wonder if any enterprising members of the underclass have taken to importing them, glueing the Toyota badges in place, and flogging them as genuine, rock solid Aygos?
Sod it, if nobody's tried it, I might have a go

I live in Luanda for about 10 months a year, so it's just a 30 minute trip down the road for me, I didn't go last year as it wasn't really publicised, but this years' was in the diary from March onwards!
Landwind didn't have a stand at the show, but their knock-offs are all over town as well.... the "honest" importers don't take the Nissan badges off, they simply add a badge that reads ZZ at the start, so you have ZZNissan on the back!!
I'm not sure about the pricing of the 911 either.... the Prado prices came from the official brochure, the Porsche prices from the salesman, the traditional way of working out luxury car pricing here is to take the US price and multiply by 3, that would make the 911 closer to $280k I guess, given the Murcielago cost its owner $700k on the road here it seems much more likely that's the case.
It is a sorry state of affairs when there's an Angolan show and no British one, I think that there's possibly more disposable income here at the moment though.... the poor might have nothing here, but the rich have plenty (see my other threads on the Lambo, Rolls and Bentley owning chappie here)
Unfortunately the car wash contest was only one day, which was the day before I went... best laid plans and all that.
