Roads were fooked this morning on the short 1 mile stretch into the small villagey place I work on a monday. Drove the 13miles on main roads with no problems. Then I get to a small incline into the car park and that was me stuck. Had to reverse back into the stationary traffic and sit for another 30mins while I wathced all manner of smaller hatchbacks drive up the same incline without issues.

While I'm stuck in traffic I sit and watch some poor chap in a 10plate Volvo XC90 spinning just his front wheels, going nowhere. He was trying to get out of the most modest of inclines out of a side street on to the main roads.

Now, I really like the XC90, in fact I'd have one. But why was it sat there spining the front wheels only, they are 4wd and supposed to be good at it! I suppose the driver just did not know how to active AWD drive mode.

Just shows you that it doesn't matter what car you drive, it's all about the tyres! (and knowing how to engage AWD).

BTW, my car is a Volvo v70 auto. Had the thing in "winter" mode and it was sheeit. New tyres fitted last week too, just not winter ones!!

My sister has an A6 quattro which I thought it would be awesome in the snow. Until she told me that the diffs don't lock, so you still get stuck once one wheel starts spinning.

Sympathies with your car - light back end, auto box, rear wheel drive and summer tyres pretty much suck when the roads are like this. You'll get more traction if you weigh the back end down with some bags of sand or something heavy.

Last year people were struggling to get round the carpark at my work. A slight/modest incline to get round. The only person that got totally stuck was a lady driving an XC90. Maybe they're not that great! She had snow mats and everything. Admittedly she was doing EVERYTHING wrong so she was not helping the situation.

Try driving an x308 Xjr biglaugh. Even on the supposed clear roads the tc flashes like mad. Well it does until I turn it off.

I learnt on another thread that not all XC90s are AWD.

the Insignia I'm using at the moment is proper $hit in the snow
(that makes a full house then, it is $hit in all conditions) hehe

I can't wait to get back in my own car tbh biggrin

We live on a slope that had not been gritted. The missus left this morning in her Lexus RX with unfashionably tall knobbly tyres. Pressed the 'snow' button and sailed off to work with a cheery wave and a smile.

I followed her out of the drive in my BMW auto with wide summer low-profile tyres and the car promptly did the automotive impression of a new born deer on an ice sheet.

I didn't really expect anything else, but this time of year does remind me that my car is good in most instances, but properly rubbish when the white stuff falls.

tyres need running in. a good 300-500 miles at least of clear road, hardly going to get run in in these conditions.

The haldex system on the R gave me a few shocks this morning, mid corner, wee bit of power (o.k I was playing) but if felt like it sent ALL the power to the rear, very entertaining.

Having said that, it then collected it all up very nicely, making me look a lot better than I actually am.

Really!!??

Everydays a school day.

Wouldn't have thinked that!

It really pi$$es you off though. Sat there, looking a tw@T in what is supposed to be a swedish born (i.e. a country not shy of a bit of powder) premium branded motor (well sort of). And your stuck, looking a numpty and what sails by? A skinny tyred bag of sheeit Nissan Micra...furious

I was stuck at the bottom of the rather ghey hill and managed to inconvenience a stroen Picasso, a Micra and a Ford Fiesta. They all got up without having to stop readjusting there mascara.

I know it's not for you, but the mental image of that, is very funny.

Snow provides quite a bit of amusement watching incompetant drivers in their Defenders leave the diff lock off and spin up like a fool.

Sadly I can't laugh all that much as I drive a modidfied Seat Ibiza Diesel - toooooo much torque for roundabouts to be amusing when there are lots of cars to hit.

I had great amusement driving past a tourag and defender who were both stuck spinning their wheels on a small hill. Drove around and past them in front wheel drive audi - but i had winter tyres on...

For all those cold weather/winter tyre doubters - try them and you'll understand! (you still need to drive sensibly and with care though, but they are just so good in these conditions - cold/snow).

My car is really bad in the snow too. 245 rear tyres with hardly any weight over the back axle means trying to get moving on any gradient or anything more than 2 inches of snow... no chance.

It's not your car, it's the tyres - please refer to the 85 winter tyres threads currently running.

P.S. XC90s are well known for malfunctioning awd - no way of knowing it doesn't work until the rear wheels fail to spin.

Not all AWD systems are the same:
