So with all the usual PH anti-4x4 hate being flung around rolleyes

Exactly how many of you car drivers with winter tyres on actually stop and help pull out or recover vehicles less able to deal with the conditions?

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I'm yet to see a car shod with winter tyres (and having such superior grip to a 4x4 hehe ) actually helping anyone.

So come on - own up biggrin

I towed the neighbour's 320d up the hill, mostly to get it out of the way so I could get home.

I have winter tyres on my daily driver, but I've yet to help anyone by towing them, and rather suspect that that will remain the case for the entire winter, no matter how bad the weather gets and how many stranded cars I pass. It's not that I'm not a good Samaritan, it's just that the Elise doesn't make a very good tow car.

You're really desperate to justify a 4x4 aren't you? biggrin

We're possibly swapping our current cars in for a Defender in the new year, I'd help people in genuine need ie if it's a situation they could not predict such as sudden heavy snowfall, but hybrid car drivers and those who venture out unprepared can fk off laugh

hehe

I helped someone on foot last year because I didn't think conditions were good enough to get my summer tyre shod car out.

This is getting a bit boring to be honest. Lets all bash 4x4 owners......blah blah blah.

Yes I have a 4x4, but I also have snow and ice tyres fitted. I also carry snow chains & tow rope every where. I am not judgmental as to who I help out, last year I came home to 2 bottles of wine on my doorstep from a person I rescued. This year I have got a free Christmas tree.

Have a 4x4 with winter tyres. finding it quite ammusing the amount of BMWs and Mercs stuck again. especially the X5 that could not get out of a car park on level ground.

I have a pair of MSA-spec ones fixed to the rear subframe, just in case I need recovery at any time, but I won't be using them to tow anyone else. Apart from anything else I would technically be breaking the law, as Elises are not homologated for towing.

If anyone gets stuck in my street myself and all of the neighbours are straight out to push/dig. If I see anyone stuck in their car I'll almost always offer to help. I carry a shovel in the boot just for occasions like that.

I hope that should I need the help of others that karma will see me alright.

Last year I was 5th in a line of cars stuck at the bottom of the bank leading to my village. I jumped out and pushed the first 3 cars up whilst shouting helpful hints at the stranded female drivers (STOP SPINNING YOUR WHEELS, IT'S NOT HELPING - sort of thing). THe 4th car in the queue was a Land Rover Discovery, the guy driving it just sat in the warmth of his cabin watching me do it. As soon as the bank was clear he drove off. As I was stood at the top of the bank catching my breath I was astonished to see my Mrs slowly making her way up the bank in our 320 BMW!

I like to think that she's learned her snow driving techniques from me. I guess it may have simply been luck though.

Oh, I get it.

Now I see, winter tyre users are the same people that are 4x4 haters.

Thanks for clearing that up.

See ya.

I had to tow an Omega out of the way to clear the road enough to pass, in my 255 width summer tyred E46 (some people need to learn to drive in the snow)

Also helped clear the hill on our street, gritters don't come near it and it's impassable when frozen. Was a group effort mind you, around 15 of us clearing the road.

Now when you say free, did the conversation go something like "yes I'll tow you out of that ditch but that's a lovely looking christmas tree in your boot".
