Was just after a little bit of advice really. I am going to look at a 306 D Turbo tomorrow, and was after any tips for the main things I should be looking out for. Obviously the usual bits that you would check on any car, but I know there are quite a few high mileage dust bins out there. I didnt want to be unfortunate enough to buy one of these nono.

Many thanks in advance

This is my post : http://pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&f...

Mine is brilliant. Depending on what you come from, it can take a while to get used to the odd power band but it is quite punchy in the right rev range. I have averaged 47mpg over 800 odd miles I love it for its sheer unpretentiousness.

Thats exactly what I was looking for, Ill have a look through it now. I have had a few mates that have had them, and they rate them pretty highly. My last car was an Astra Sport, this will be my first Diesel, so I think its a good place to start. The only thing I really worry about with one of these is the trim (Electric Windows, Central Locking etc). I didnt think these were terribly reliable on that front, unlike the German/Jap counterparts.

Mine is on 153k and most things still work! I think I have a disconnected fan pipe as the interior blower isn't blowing at the moment and it is too cold to have a proper look.

If it is your first diesel it'll take a while to get used to, they are pretty damn sluggish until you get to about 3,000 rpm!

Tuning guide on how to "tweak" the injector pump. Then keep an eye out for a nitrous kit. Those motors respond very well biggrin

Had a 306 D Turbo from new for a couple of years. Mine was an 1998 S plate car in that Blaze Gold which was all the rage at that time. I was sold on these having had an XRDT as a hire car while my 405Mi16 was in for some work. Trouble is the one I had didn't really seem as good as the XRDT, I put it down to a tweak of the waste gate settings, basicaly it had a lot of punch low down but lost it very quickly, I remember winding it right up on the A40 once and it would NOT pull into 3 figures on the flat. An earlier car would have done that easily. Having said that, it handled like a Kart and was still on balance one of the best handling car's I've ever driven.

Recently I've revisited 306DT's as I've bought a couple for my Daughter, (the first got bent after a few months) and 12 years on I still think they are good cars. Our latest is a 150000 mile Estate with HDi engine, this one has definitly lost that peakiness the 1998 car I had, it's very linear in it's power delivery, this perhaps makes it a little less fun, but I reckon it's probably quicker. On a recent long trip to Scotland this 150000 mile smoker recorded 56MPG, which beat my the MPG on my 120D over exactly the same journey at the same speed and could carry a damn site more too. Impressive for a car that cost about 25th of the BM.

Not sure what to look out for over and above the usual, I think there is an issue with the rubber bushes on part of the rear suspension, they seperate and cause the handling to go to pot. If you drive and are not impressed, there's something wrong.

The wiring leading to the doors is shocking, it can crimp over time leading to knackered electric windows etc.

I'll second the comment about the wiring, although by now any 306 will probably be old enough that it will have had this work done.

You need to make sure you know if you are buying an older DT 1.9 or a newer HDI version (IIRC these are 2.0) as there is quite a difference with fuel economy.

Depending who's serviced it you may find that the 4th glow plug isn't changed. (Three are easy to reach but the 4th can be tricky as the approach is obscured.)

Bad news chaps, I did a HPI check this morning before setting off to go and see it, and it was a CAT C in 2007. I'm not even going to go and bother to look at it!

That is a shame, although there are plenty of them out there so not to worry!
