I've just agreed to buy a car off eBay, and it's a Business Seller. Can I safely assume that if I arrive to see the car and it is not as I expect, due to Distance Selling Regulations, I am able to walk away? I am happy with the price based on the photos, service history and information provided, but I want to protect myself against buying a total dog.

So you didn't view it before bidding?

If it advertised correctly then with going to see it you are obliged to pay up.
How much was it?

Yeah, if it is not as described, you have no obligation to buy it, but if it is as described, you have entered into a contract.

Thats the theory, in reality, there are alot of time wasters and chancers on eBay, not saying you're one, but buying something for 'X' amount, and turning up offering 'Y' amount, isn't how it's supposed to work!

Oh, not at all. If it is how I expect it to be, as per the description, I am more than happy to buy it. I am not interested in haggling the price down for that price we've agreed, but I am worried that I get there and it's the polar opposite of the advert, and then I'm stuck with it, or he tries to force me to pay, or takes me through the courts to get the money back.

Obviously I'm talking worst case scenario here, but I want to make sure I don't make a very expensive (£7,500) mistake!

Totally agree, if it's as advertised, where it makes no specific mention of anything wrong with the car, then I am more than happy with it. Just making sure I'm covered.

How do I save all of the information from the webpage, so that I can have a permanent copy of it? Aside from doing multiple screen dumps that is.

No printer. I will ask someone to print it for me though.

Find the 'Print Screen' button on your keyboard. Press it. Open up 'Paint'. Paste the image you have just copied and save it. You could always email it somewhere as a back-up, too.

Cheers. I've done all the screen dumps now, and will get someone to print ASAP for me, or do it at work tomorrow!

I'm intrigued - what was the car which was so rare that it was worth a £7.5k punt on something too far away to check first?

Who said it was rare?

I did. It clearly must be - otherwise, who would punt £7.5k unseen on a car which WASN'T rare and that they could therefore choose and buy at leisure with a full inspection?

Maybe the car went cheap? For example, if the average price of an E60 520 was 10k, and one came up on eBay for bidding, if you were in the market for one, you wouldn't put a cheeky £7.5k bid on it?

If it was described as a nail, then no, you wouldn't, and if it is described as good condition/60,000 miles/one previous owner/FSH, then why not? At worst, it's not as described, you leave feedback saying the seller is a timewaster, and you walk away, no money lost and back where you started.

I think you jumped the gun a little...

Have bought 3 vehicles off ebay without seeing them, 2 absolutely perfect, 1 looked as described but had a few hidden engine problems that were costly to sort. Thats 1 seller I'd steer clear of mad. Might be worth asking the seller if you can get a RAC check or similar done.....oh and hpi before auction end.

Nope, it's nothing rare. I actually put the cheeky-ish offer in thinking he'd come back asking for more, so that bit me in the ass a bit basically! It's a 350z. I thought the asking price of £8500 was pretty reasonable but put in £7500 just to try, and here we are!
