...is mpg!

On staggered summer 255/235's I get 32/3mpg, with 215 winters I get 36/7mpg when doing a 60mph motorway comparison test.

Not bad for a 10 year old 4.4 V8!

I would argue its not the winter tyres; cold winter air is denser, so to get the same power from the engine the ECU has to inject less fuel. Got to contribute, no?

Shush, the environment lobby will want them as mandatory all year.
Ok, I know about the eco tyre crap.

I couldn't put my winter tyres on this year, as one is off curing AIDS, one is off discovering the cure for cancer, and the other two have just singlehandedly achieved world peace.

Amazing things, these winter tyres. So amazing that the two words have been typed so often on here, and now the words have lost meaning in my head.

As much as a fan of winter tyres as I am, I'd imagine its a case of this and adding in the driver being more gentle with the pedals due to the lower traction...there will be a theoretical benefit as you will wheelspin less, but can't imagine this is measurable

If there is more air it will need to inject more fuel to keep the mixture correct.

Yes, winter tyres are the Mahatma Gandhi of the tyre world. They have a certain Mother Theresa quality about them. I bet John Lennon would have had them on his car, had he lived long enough to see them.

This.

Fuel consumption always goes down during winter ime.

Mine have done over 15000miles since march. This includes doing 135mph in 40deg temps for hours on end. Not bad for nearly 3 tons of metal that they have to carry.

Some or all of tyre pressures, rolling resistance, change in radius altering gearing, narrower tyres offer a reduced frontal area and thus lower aerodynamic drag.

I'm ashamed that I am running on dirty summer tyres, kicking out more Carbon Monoxide and Green House Gases. While your winter tyres are out curing AIDS, my summers are off setting alight wheelie bins and shouting abuse at old people.

That's ok. My all season tyres are out beating up pensioners at the moment, it is all about how you raise your tyres I guess.. The winter tyres just got more attention smile

Tbh i'd rather save the £200 a corner (when you include fitting etc) for winter tyres for my A4 and take the hit on MPG!!!!

And tbh so far my P Zero Rosso's are doing fine.

Exactly FI engines have AFM or MAF to keep things correct. A denser charge will give more power at max airflow. I think Carb fed engines would benefit from colder air as they would run leaner ?
