Is Porsche Readying A New Supercar for Detroit?

Porsche promises big things for its return to US show after four years away

Not the Detroit show car. Probably
Not the Detroit show car. Probably
Porsche is expected to show off a new supercar at the Detroit motor show in January, marking a return to the US show after a four-year absence.

"We'll have something spectacular to show there," Porsche spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode told financial website Bloomberg on Friday, though Porsche is remaining tight-lipped as to the exact nature of what it will reveal. "You'll have to wait and be surprised," said Bode.

It's widely expected that the mystery Detroit star will borrow significantly from the universally praised 918 Spyder unveiled at the Geneva show earlier this year.

The smart internet money, however, is currently speculating that, unlike the hybrid 918 Spyder (which is getting its own limited production run), the Detroit show car will be a more conventionally powered car.

A 'sister' model to the 918 would make sense, as it would allow Porsche to capitalise on the warm reception and high demand it has experienced for the 918 Spyder. We'll just have to wait until January to find out for sure...

And it was "too fast" with a top speed of 30mph, as it was believed that "it would send the horses crazy". hehe

918 look with the Carrera GT engine, that would do me!

More likely yet another 911 though, I do love Porsche but just how many 911 variants do you need?

They have to spend all those Cayenne Dollars somewhere! Good to see them going in the right direction.

You say that, but as someone I read recently quite rightly said...
"How many Mondeo variants do you need?....or 3 series, A4, Megane etc etc..."

Its a car produced in varying states of tune and spec... its the fact that the media focus and celebrate each an every fine tweak as something amazing to behold...
I've not seen What Car? put the 1.8LX 2.0Ghia, 1.9Tdi Estate, 1.8 5door, 2.5 4 door on the front cover month after month in the same way...

Thats said Porsche clearly get more bang from their marketing buck by drip releasing each variant. No harm in that...

Lots of internet rumours today suggesting that it is a Mazda 6 competitor with strong MkII XR2 references. Apparently there's some chap called 'sipie' who they're desperate to win over...

It's a fair point well made but at the end of the day it's not a just another Ford or Vauxhall its something far more special.

But then again choice is good but surely a lot of this stuff could just be options and not an entirely new model.

And that is exacly what Lotus should have done instead of sending out pictures of the next 5 models at the same time!

That would be awesome.

Edit: It would also mean there would be 21 911s on sale!
