Cheap Insurance groups
Discussion
My sister has just passed her test now am looking at helping her get a car for around 2k (with insurance) but it needs to be big enough to fit her 6ft8in boyfriend with room in the back for a couple of others any suggestions have looked at focus/golf but she doesnt like these so what else is there?
I'm a bit surprised that she's turning her nose up at decent stuff like Focus's and Golf's given her tiny budget. How about looking at larger Mondeo sized hatches? These are generally in less demand that smaller hatches and are consequently much better value and, of course the extra size will help accomodate the beanpole boyfriend!
Something Japanese will be cheap and chips and tough as old boots, as well as being refined, well equipped and comfortable. £500-1000 should buy a very good Nissan Primera/Mazda 626/Toyota Carina and leave a good wedge of the budget for insurance which, depending on her age, she'll probably need. Has she had any insurance quotes yet? At least that would tell her how much she's got to play with for the car.

Thanks for all the helpful advice she does like the look of the older mondeos and I believe that they aren't much bigger than the focus
edit for spelling

Sorry to break it to you, but there is absolutely no way in hell that you are going to be able to buy a car for her and insure it with £2000, the chances are that most, if not all, of that money is going to be paying for her insurance. You're just going to have to tell her to cut her coat to fit her cloth and accept something uncool until she can afford better.
Oh and by the way, don't even think about fronting the insurance: it's illegal and if she claims and the insurance company find out that it's fronted then they'll she'll be charged for driving without insurance, lose her license and face hugely loaded premiums in the future; they'll cancel the policy so you and her will both have cancelled policies on your record and you'll be liable for the damage. You have been warned.
