Seeing as i've been stuck in with all the snow thoughts have been moving to warmer times. Come February i'm going to purchase a road legal track car, probably a kit and have it ready for April.

Original thoughts were a stripped out, roof chop Mk1 Mr2 as i know them very well obviously and i know the upgrade paths.

Other thought was a stripped out Mx5, with a view to a V8 transplant.

While going through the ideas i spotted on here the MEV Exocet, basically an Mx5 with an Atom-esque body. The same company also do a mid engined Atom with bodywork type number which appeals mightily.

At the moment i have a mid engined car, i love it to bits but it can be a bit hairy on the road when you're properly on it. I have only driven my old Mk1 and 205Mi on track and again the mid engined set up did make it very tail happy.

So, my question is, given the choice, for a track car which will be used for the occasional hoon (Not big road trips or daily, will have the C2 for that) which setup would you choose?

The Front engined car will be a lot more forgiving and there's more room under the bonnet for a big engine. I assume this will be more manageable on the road too.

The mid engined car will give the purer experience? So better for track work.

Costs will end up about the same, say £7k all in, what would you choose?

I think I'd probably go F/R for a track car, since they tend to be more forgiving and more "playful" on the limit. It's really just personal preference, though.

Having driven a MK1 MR2 and an MX5 on track. I'd say get the MR2. I also like the look of the MEV Exocet thing though you would need somewhere to keep it.

I've been looking at an Exocet for a year or so's time.

Unfortunately not the most practical unless you have garage space

Yeah, practicality is not something that will bother me on this, i purely want it as an all out hoon machine.

I'm on the hunt for a 964 Porsche and was looking at all sorts of upgrades, weight loss etc to have it as a track weapon.

I'd much rather have that as the perfect road car and spend some money on a track car with road plates to compliment it. Possibly keep it as a track car and tow it most of the time, will see.

This means it will sit in the garage until i want to take it out.

With this in mind, as a pure track car, what's the consensus?

The Sonic7 i think looks brilliant but unsure on the zetec power plant. Just wondering if i could fit the current alloy V6, LSD gearbox etc from my Mr2 into the Sonic. scratchchin

So V8 front engined or V6 mid engined? confused
