So 82% of the cars sold in the world were black, white, silver or grey. This is where the joke colour charts come from for Audi/Merc/BMW grey colour charts.

OK, I have a silver car, but I would rather have it in a colour and the 2 other cars I've owned were red. This is just a bit depressing really.

That's absolutely tragic. Really.

I can see why people get black cars - they often look cool, and that ice white is a bit trendy at the moment. But "resale silver" .... yaaaaawn!

yes It's slightly depressing looking at the work car park - it's a sea of non-colours. I would never buy a silver/grey/black/white car unless it was massively cheaper than the alternative, although black and white are marginally better than silver.

ETA: So 74% of cars sold in Europe aren't coloured. It's interesting that brown is third of the actual colours:

I dont know if it is just down to resale concerns

I think modern 'blob' shaped cars dont really suit colours anywhere near as much as more angular designs from the 70's and 80's.

Audi quattro, looked the dogs danglies in bright red, Audi A5... less so.

Might just be me though smile

It is extremely boring yes, but to be honest for me it's entirely down to avoiding road rage. I've owned one red sports car and sorry, but never again. If I'm going to own a nice car then I want to offset the attention seeking element by having it an a very discrete colour. Since the red sports car that I owned all my cars have been dark blue, black, or silver, with one dark green one. Dull, but I feel safer and I absolutely hate confrontation.

You only have to look in the showrooms of car dealers as you drive past to see this horrid phenomenom..... mad

The other day I was in slow moving traffic going past the big Merc dealer in Watford....and noticed that EVERY ONE of the dozen or more cars in the showroom was either black/grey/silver as was ALL the used stock on the forecourt and there must have been 20+ cars visable from the road.

I would put money on 82% of car sales in 2010 probably being lease or company cars, as in reality there is probably still not that many people spunking that sum of money on new cars... Most lease or company car colour choices are limited.

I had a Red Fiesta Zetec S company car... swapped company and now have a Grey car... to be fair the main company car brand BMW/Audi/Merc don't offer that many colours anyway.

It's about 50/50 overall. Audi was 42% private 58% fleet in 2009.

We currently have 16 cars in our showroom. 15 of them are black, silver, grey or white. One is red.

And I was thinking that it's got better over the last year or two, with at least some colours. Long way to go though.

You should have stopped for a visit - they have an SLS and are okay about you sitting in it. It is black though, so probably not worth the effort.

I have two green cars and one black, which is going soon to be replaced by another black one. As others have said, company car colour choice is limited.

I've actually got to go in there soon and take my mothers A-Class in for something to be sorted, so will make a loud enough comment about the showroom being depression central with no colour in sight..... wink

Tragic isn't it?

On the plus side, my best friend often comments how when in convoy he can never lose sight of me in traffic...Just look out for the bright blue rear end sticking out from the sea of Grey/Black/White.

On the other hand, it does make me smile to see my nice green and yellow car amongst the sea of silver at work. smile

When I got my Merc (red) it seemed to be pretty well the only non-silver or black car amongst about 200 used MBs. I did get a very good deal on it. smile

Am I the only person here who's had such a negative experience owning a brightly coloured sports car?

It's depressing (says the man with a black and a silver car, as well as a blue one, who's just about to take delivery of another silver one), but mention the idea of trading in a car that is not silver, black, grey or white (five years ago white would not have been on this list) and the dealer will say something like, "I really like that blue myself, but it will be hard to sell, so it will affect the trade-in price."

I once talked to a dealer about ordering a new E39 M5 in Imola Red and the woman was close to forbidding me to do it.
