M4 average speed cameras trap 6,500 in South Wales

Good to see a lot of the comments published, these things can be a royal pain in the arse sometimes.

The 50mph limit from Newport to Cardiff West is a joke.

It is such a backward step that we have a 3 lane road that can only be used at 50mph. I understand the greenies an the local government waffle on about the noise/saftey/reduced fuel consumption but the way I see it is it's an opportunity to generate a substantail amount of money and annoy people. I

I fail to see how having a 50 limit which causes people to drive along stairing at their speedo is in anyway a safety enhancement plus has anyone else noticed how bad the tailgating can be? This combined with narrow lanes and lorries most of which travel at 56mph is a disaster waiting to happen.

People do seem to get awfully close in those 50s... as in sub 6 feet close!

The speed limit reduction is only temporary and will be lifted once the variable speed limit system has been installed and completed. There are also extensive road works going on in that area with the replacement of the central barrier with new concrete ones, so that has also been covered by the lowered limit.

After so many people were stranded on the Southern section of the M25 because of concrete central reservations (ie cars can't switch to the opposite carriageway) it's amazing how many more of these are being constructed.

Most of the M1 widening includes concrete central res. What's the point?
And from a safety point of view, I thought metal barriers or cables had more "give" and weren't like hitting.....well, a concrete block.

It's far safer for motorcyclists as they don't get entangled in wires, less likely to ping a car back into the motorway and far quicker to fix if someone does go into it.

Also cars and bikes tend to glance off them, rather than hitting them head on at 70mph, as mentioned they are also safer for Bikes, and Lorries, who find it difficult to plough through ac oncrete barrier, unlike the two that closed the M25 at J17/16 last year killing a couple of people going through teh std metal ones.

Back to the cameras smile What speed are people getting ticketed at? There must be one of those thousands of people on here who can answer that.

They're not going to tell us that as it gives us a new target to aim for.
The M1 near where I live has them and it's a nightmare.
You either spend your time watching the speedo or use the cruise control, but then when people fall back from you, you start to mistrust the CC. Horrid state of affairs.

One of the people in the comments says he got a ticket at 57mph.

What I want to know is why they've recently extended the 50mph limit temporarily for an extra 2 miles eastbound towards the Severn Bridge for no reason at all. Genuinely, there are a handful of cones at the side of the road and absolutely nothing else going on confused

Interesting - I find the trucks tend to carry on (where possible) at their limited 56MPH (90KPH). That's why they're always up your arse if you try to drive at indicated 52/53.
