A friend was supposed to pick up his new (used) car today, but the dealer called and said he couldn't because they had to wait for the previous owners V5 to arrive from the DVLA.

Is this balls or what? I thought the dealer could tax a car with the transfer to dealer slip they get?

Surely your mate wouldn't want the car without the V5 anyway? No proof of ownership...

Edited to add, that he'll want to sign the V5 as well.

Balls - you don't need a V5 to tax a car but you will need to prove it's insured

They've probably lost it (or the previous owner didn't leave it).

This might take a while, if they have applied for a new V5 from the DVLA. Took the OH a couple of weeks before she got the car.

Loony - couldn't they tax it on the green slip?

How would they have the yellow slip if they didnt have the V5?

I'm pretty sure you need the V5 or tax reminder to tax a car at the post office.

It doesn't sound as though they have any of the V5. Yes, they could tax on the green slip if they had it.

The only way to tax a car without the V5 is if you are the registered keeper which the new owner won't be yet.

In what sort of siuation would the dealer not have the V5 for a car they have for sale? Shouldn't they have had it off the person/organisation they got the car off?

There is another way - go to a DVLA centre, queue for a long time and buy road tax and register yourself as a new keeper on the spot.

I did this with a car about 3 years ago. The car was bought through a finance company who registered it to themselves, not my wife. We never realised we didn't have the V5 (car was delivered to the door) and I noticed a few days after the tax had expired that it had.

Going to the DVLA centre they told us it was registered to the finance company, registered it to us and issued a tax disc on the spot. A week later a new, correct V5 came through. (A month later another V5 came through with the finance company's name on at our address.. but that's another story!)

Not too sure what the problems are regarding how easy it was to register a car to yourself, but there you go - that's what you do if you don't have the V5 !

V5C shows registered keeper. It specifically states on it that it is not proof of ownership.

Normally happens when car is going through a cherished plate transfer. Its very common when a car changes owners.

The green slip should be back quite quickly, and you can tax it on this. It can take a while for the new full V5 to come back.
