I have a ford puma that just needs topping up with a little oil for a long journedy.
The Ford recommended oil is 5/30. If I just topped up the engine with 15/40 would I be doing more harm than good. Im trying to same money and convienence here.

bearing in mind in the cold oil is thicker, your car needs something like water (5w/30), your pouring in treacle (15w/40) so not ideal.

Still would be better than no oil getting to the important bits though, and 5w/30 is like rocking horse st to get hold of!

Can you not get a small bottle from your local dealer?? would be best!

It won't do any harm - a small top-up will have very little effect on the overall viscosity of the oil. Better to top up with the "wrong" oil than allowing the oil level to get too low.

Halfords have loads of 5w30 including Ford Spec. It's not that pricey

Tesco and ASDA do Ford specific 5W30 oil in 1l or 4l bottles. It's really not difficult to obtain.
