The Golf, it's more honest. The Audi is a more expensive Golf. Proper people would pick the Golf, I would say. Pretenders would pick the Audi. biggrin

confused

I'd pick the Golf from those two.

I've just read it's the same engine in both, but I think the Golf is more iconic tho. It's stood the test of time for sure.

A mate has a A3 who swears by them but I don't know. I prefer the styling on the front of the Golf. Also my mate's always having to tinker with the turbo on his A3 but it's getting old now.

They're basically the same car but the Golf works out quicker on urban roads as no-one is going to let an A3 driver out at junctions.

If you mean a brand new one, I'd wait and see what the new Audi A3 looks like (does anyone know for sure as Google turns up loads of abominations?).

I'd like to see what the new A3 looks like because better styling is one of the reasons I like the Golf. But I can't afford a new Audi A3. I'll be looking at second hand ones.

The are very similar cars. That's one of the reasons that it's hard to choose. Looks like the turbo on Golf might be more linear which is something I prefer. I don't want something that's got a massive turbo lag.

Octavia vRS and save 4k+ - no damped grab handles, but how often do you use them?

Open your eyes ! It's the same boring Germanic platform-share stuff in different lederhosen !

I've have had both A3 and Golf in various specs. Both duller than dull. Go and look at a Seat or Skoda. Then have a hard look at a 1 series. smile
You can listen to that if you think image doesn't matter , I think it matters in my life , the BMW has a better image than the golf not so sure about the a3, the 1series drives better and it may be that it's cheaper on diesel

The thing I don't like about the GTD is that it looks like they've washed all the fun out of a GTI by taking all the red off it even down to the stitching on the steering wheel. At least the A3 was grey and boring to begin with.

Maybe it's just me but I certainly see more Audi A3's on the road than VW Golf's - so in a wierd way I'd consider the Golf more 'exclusive'.
(Although that might be because some A3 owners drive like ccensoredks so I tend notice them more where as the Golf is more discrete.) laugh

Between the Golf and the A3 I'd take the Golf everytime, as others have said though the Seat and Skoda are also worth a look.

The 8P A3 is due to be replaced in the next 12months. That is the only reason I would buy the MKV1 Golf (even though the chassis/drivetrain is the same at the moment). We have an 8P/MkV-V1, the 8P interior is far superior with respect to interior materials e.g. carpets pile quality/plastics...and general solidity.

Oh yes , I know how image affects some people in their decisions making.

I thought there was a reason why the op didn't include fords , Mazda , Skoda etc his post . If he wants a decent car without the ££££ sign attached to it then VW is the way forward even though costs are very similar between all 3

and if your buying it yourself rather expensive, with all the bits on his one (Leather,Xenons PDC etc) list price was near £26k!!!

I get the point of value for money with the Seat and Skoda. I want 6 gears though so that rules out the Octavia.

Image is important, but, 4k important I'm not convinced yet.

So it's Seat Lean Cupra vs Golf GTD........... iconic style vs value for money

Ooh, I don't agree with that smile. A 1 series has a horrid dash ad tiny back seats, and has the image of the cheapest BMW, whereas a Golf is just a Golf - it's what you buy when you're not into marketing etc and have a life to get on with. Imo.

Both use exactly the same pq35 platform and exactly the same cr170 tdi engine. Last time I looked the A3 was cheaper than the Golf.
