Pretty sure I know the answer, but can any expert advise if this damage means a new tyre?

Best to call at a garage that does MOT's, but if you can see the cord, then it is most definately scrap, I would say from the photo's that yours is heading that way, sorry.

I'd replace it anyway on the grounds of my own safety.

ok just checked the MOT history and seems it was spotted and put as an advisory.

Yup I'll take it into a tyre place (I'm sure they'll say it needs doing)

I'd change it. Far too much at risk for the price of a tyre.

If the damage was in the thick rim protecting lip some tyres have I'd say leave it, but you haven't got one and that's right in the thinnest sidewall area - personally I wouldn't risk it.
