This has got to be a potential SOTW.

Uhmm, I read that and thought the same but it's still cheap considering the overall condition - cheap enough perhaps to fix any potential issues unless it's a major one but it would hopefully be evident on a test drive if one does exist.

You don't have to hate it if I don't have to love it. That car was a miserable money-pity the day it came out of the factory. Now, in 2010, it's a write-off the second it needs new tyres. Avoid.

Not a fan of buying these cheap.

They tend to have loads of random faults so I'd probably spend a couple of grand on a good one. 3.0 V6 also please.

Does the 2.5 V6 have a list of known issues?

I think I need this car, can feel my wallet twitching!

A mate of mine had one, other than the engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension, steering and of course the electrics it ran quite reliably

Sounds like he had a good one then hehe

I have owned an Alfa .....for 4 months paperbag

What can I say, it was reliable enough and everything worked ......sometimes wink

But it was lovely and I was way too fussy and should have kept it.

Still love most Alfas though

With a beautiful interior and a magnificent (if not overly powerful) engine.

For 750 quid, it's disposable.

Engine is generally ok (it has roots in the 1970's) - mine ate all it's valvetrain but that was due to poor maintenance some 30K before we bought it.

I don't know if the suspension is anything like the 156 -- if it is, it's prone to wearing out.

(Edit to add: Our V6 has 126K on it and seems to still run ok. Poor on fuel though)

It's basically the same engine as the 3.0/3.2 and is generally very strong.

Usual cambelt caveats apply.

Bobda on here had a beatiful example that some lowlife decide to steal off him.

I want those front seats, just to turn it into some kind of swivel/desk chair. Would be nicer in red though.

If you look at the mileages most 166's have done (most are over 100k and quite a few nearer 200k) they can't be that unreliable....

In truth, they're not a lot worse (and in some ways better) than any aged exec. They have a few set things which always seem to go on them but most of the basics are no worse than anything else.

The 2.5 is not that popular as it drinks as much as the 3.0 but isn't a lot faster than the 2.0.

The suspension does wear out.

Suspension and mafs are a consummable item, and at 125k its either due or overdue a belt change, new owner has just found out and wants to move it asap without incurring the cost or the engine lunching itself.

I loved mine smokin and keep looking, but want a facelifted 3.2ti in black with sand leather. Not picky at all me wink
